I need to buy a timing light to use on my Super AI.
I've never owned one or even used one. Any suggestions on a good "plain Jane" model to buy?
I don't need one with a lot of bells and whistles or top of the line. Any suggestions on brands to stay away from?
Thanks for any help here. Knobshine

I have an El-Cheapo from J.C. Whittney that still works after 25 years, had a Sears that quit after about 10 years, at work I have a 10 year old Snap-on. I don't know of any brands to stay away from. I would say go to your favorite tool dealer and buy their plain-jane, should have no problems.

Yeah! What he said, and (gotta throw my two cents in) get one with "Inductive pick up" (these are pretty much the norm now, but I have seen a couple of the old style still for sale). The inductive type allows you to hook up to a running engine without getting zapped in most cases (if the wire insulation is weak, you're going to get zapped in most cases anyway).

WARNING, Don't drop the pickup assembly on anything hard and unforgiving. They're made of a "Ferro-Ceramic" (a ceramic with lots of really tiny metal chunks or "Dust" in it) and can shatter. They've improved a lot over the years but you still have to be careful with them to get a long life out of them. Oh-yeah, if they'll let you, try it out and see if it's bright enough to see in the area you're going to be working in (checking timing on a moonless night isn't much of a problem but try it during the day at noon on a clear summer day outside for a challenge).

Thanks guys!
I've already learned something from your posts. Now I'll feel a little better when I go to buy one. Knobshine
