I would like to get a 110 volt motor that you can reverse the direction on it and also is varible speed. A friend has one that has a lever on one end and as you move it, it slows down and then will reverse. Does anyone have one to sell or know where I could obtain one. Thanks

Also expensive, but completely on point, is a DC motor. Not sure if they come 110V or not, but know for a fact you can get them 220V. They maintain full torque down to incredibly slow speeds, and since it's DC, can reverse very easily. These are giant versions of drill motors essentially. Try a Graingers catalog.

If the motor that you are discribing is fairly new, it is known as a brush-shifting-motor. They are very expensive. If it is an old motor it is probably a repulsion type motor. If this is what it is, when it dies it is dead as they are no longer produced. The only parts available are on the shelves of old electric motor repair shops and will have at least a 1/2" of dust on them, or if you happen to know where there is a parts motor laying around. You could fabricate a handle mech. to the brush holder of a repulsion type motor and make it reverse and variable. Hope this helps. Email with any questions. Steve

The motor you are describing sounds like the drive off an old generator testing bench. I doubt there are any being made like that today. Your best chance would be in an old automotive shop auction.

Check with your local electric motor repair shop. (Check yellow pages) Some of the better ones may carry specialty motors, or they can probably get you one.) You just might be lucky enough to find something on their shelf that has been rebuilt, and save some bucks!

Hi rod,

The cheapest one would be to use a drill motor if that'll work.

You didn't say what size you needed.
