Farm Fleet has Generac 5000 watt generators with 9 hp Briggs Stratton engines being marked down for their close out sales. Any positive or negative on these units ? Could a person expect 1000 hours of usage on 1 of these units with normal maintenance and care ? Looking for storm back up at home and occaisional use in barn with no power.

Any of the small portibles are ok until they are run low on oil or are overloaded. Copper winding are superior to aluminium. Low oil shut off is vital & auto idle is great for occassion tool use on construction or RV use. If running electronic loads a electronic voltage regulator is required eg Honda etc. My Coleman 5000kw has a 10HP Techumse that the previous owners busted the connecting rod after it galled & grabbed the crank. Don't know if they ran it out of oil or the choke was left partially on. It's voltage & frequency can be set with a adjustable pot hidden between the gen cooling fins. At no load the rpm is set for 63hz(+5%) cycles & voltage of 132V (+10%) to compensate for loading/line drop. The rpm is set with preload on the throttle spring. Many small generators are found running too slow or too fast.

i bought a gas driven welder which makes power at 1800 RPM.(Onan/Miller) Cost a little more, but now i can weld. It gets used more often, so i don't have the problem of stale gas, and hard starts between power outages that happen once every 17 years.I like it!

We have a Generac 5000W of the cheaper type. Served us well in 1998 when an ice storm darkened us for 3 weeks. We used it during waking hours and contributed greatly to the domestic tranquility we hold so dear. No trouble since we got it but has only seen a few hours use since as I run it occasionally to keep the gas fresh in it.

I have a Generac 5000 with the Briggs Vanguard 9 hp engine. It's great. I wouldn't go near any other Briggs type.

I have a Generac 4000xl. Seems to be a good unit and quiet. But here is a link to some options.

I have one similar to their ARV, on wheels and a 25kw, 3 phase. It gives me everything I needed, portable buzzbox (without paying for a portable welder), 3 phase power for some machinery a little too large for convenient phase conversion, and emergency power (1 phase) for the house. I picked it up, used, for the price of a cheap new 5kw. These things are used by dairy operations and 25kw is a little small for them. Only difficulty is my tractor is too small to give 25kw, more like 12kw. Not really a problem but I'd like a little larger tractor. Only consideration I'd have for using one a lot is that the power plant (tractor) is awfully expensive to be wearing out for that purpose. But the portability is great.

I was wondering about one that Harbor Freight has. It's a 11hp Briggs Industrial Plus 7200 watts, Campbell Hausfeld brand. Limited Quantities at $499.99 Seems the engine would be worth that? Item #53883-3JHA

I've often wanted to try putting a generator on an Allis Chalmers "B" machine coupled onto the pto shaft.

I have seen a pto driven generator before. Kinda pricey though, as I recall. Likely due to the speed-up drive mechanism needed in addition to the generator...e.g. 540 pto rpm to 1800 or, more likely, 3600 gen rpm.

With Generators it all depends on there use. That type is nice for short term power back up. If it goes out for a week?? Then think about running your lawn mower for a week full blast?!? If you could spend some more go for a 2-cylinder Vangard type 8000 watt min that way you could run most things in your house with out shuting off thing to run others. You could heat your water or run the stove if you wanted to. The best way is to have two a real small one just for a few lights and the big one for all the rest. You use a lot of fuel about 1-gal a hour with the big ones so it adds up fast. Electric start is real nice try starting one when it is 10 degs. out by hand. I try to keep mine where it is a little warmer but got caught off gaurd this week. I wish I had my big one back, I went for the pull start one and that was a mistake. (mine is now a 12 hp pull start) I had the 8,000watt Vangaurd and screwed up and shorted it with a back feed after using it for 12 years. Then I went the cheaper way and regret it now. It works great but my other one was a whole lot better in the long run. The smaller engines just don't hold up as good for long term use, but they are cheaper too. The others cost more but then you get what you pay for. Mark H.

I have a simular setup, except mine has NO exciter and it runs at 3600 rpm loaded or not I dont expect to get 1000 hrs from it even with maitenence. If your machine has the exciter that would allow it to idle down when the load drops it would extend the life expectancy.

My Generac 4200 has about 250 hours on it with zero repairs so far. Has the Briggs 8 Hp. Hard to go wrong with the Briggs motors, they are generally darn good. I've had this unit for about ten years.

I have a Coleman 4000 watt driven with an 8 hp Briggs single cylinder. Has done the job for me. Have had it for about 6 years, only maintenance I've done is to drain the fuel system between usages and change the oil. I would estimate it has an easy 500 hours on it. We did run it for almost a week solid a few years back when we lost power due to a massive windstorm here in mid-Michigan. Saved my 2 freezers full of food, provided lights and water, all that time. Would like to have one of those super nice high priced units with a name brand motor, but this one has well paid for itself, and I have no complaints!
