Try this discussion group. You will like it. I assume your drive had been glued. Sometimes the belt life can be extended by simply flipping it over. If this is not possible the timing belt idea is a good one or you can get some metal belt lacing hooks and join a new one in that way. What type of drive does your SB have? Underneath or rear?

Well this a lot more work than replacing a leather belt with a joint, but it works a lot nicer. Use a rubber timming belt,"gear belt", turned inside out, smooth side inside. It will grip better, run smoother and is pleanty strong. Only problem is you have to take the headstock spindle out of the headstock. Carefully and spotless clean here. Put it back exactly as it came out, shims I mean. And if you do this keep the belt oil free.

Paul,

I also have a southbend model A lathe. It has a leather drive belt with the clamp on belt ends with a pin thru it. Remove the pin and the ends separate. This is what it is designed to use.
Good Luck
