I am a student at the Region 9 Vocational center, we have been welding steel and cast iron and were hoping to get information on how to weld aluminum, any info on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

Why don't you send me an e-mail at my private address and let me know where you are. I'll need to ask several questions, as well, to learn more about your needs, desires, available equipment, application info, and so on.

Steve,
What will I need to equip my Lincoln SP100 mig welder in order to weld aluminum? I have a set of weight brackets in mind for my pulling tractor and will need to weld the various parts.

Would I be better off using my Lincoln 225 buzz box and aluminum rods?
Thanks, Jerry B

Hi Jerry,
Last evening, in my hast to get thru all my e-mails and so forth, I guess I didn't scroll down far enough to see your second question about the buzz box.

The Al SMAW electrodes won't run on AC polarity. If you have the 225s, I'm afraid you don't have the proper equipment to do what you'd like to do.

100 amps isn't enough amperage to weld Al more than about 1/16" in thickness Jerry. You might make a short pass on 1/8" if you preheat the base material first. You need way more capability than that don't you?

Hi Jerry,

If you have a oxy/act torch you could use that to weld the joint. You can also cut filler rod from scrap material that you have from drop off. Depending on the Al type, you may have to use borax/alcohol as a flux.
