Okay, I have on for anyone who has ever rebuilt a transmission. I have rebuilt my automatic tranny on a 89 jeep cherokee. And once the tranny was in, the bolts to the flex plate and torque convertor did not line up. I am looking for a quick and almost painless ways to spin the engine crank? I know this is not a auto mechanics board, but over the last several months I have read a lot of great posts , And if it helps I have a JD 4300 with a FEL and box scrapper.

Thanks

MikeK

thanks for all the input! I was a success! I loosend the bolts that hold the tranny to engine, and then I was able to spin the two pieces individualy. this took about and hour but nothing broke. and now I am able to spin the engine by the main crank bolt. So something was not right but now all is right in the world. (
or atleast till the first test drive)

Thanks

Mikek

Archie,
I think Mike is to late the damange has been done. Once you bolt the tranny to the belhousing without the converter installed properly the transmission pump is ruined.

mike it is good that you stopped there.
in order to install the transmission. you must first set it on it's output shaft (verticle, out of the car)and place the converter on top and spin it, it will drop over the input shaft. it will drop 3 or 4 times. what has happened is that the converter has not engaged all the splines in the transmission..... when installing automatic transmissions the converter must spin freeley and actually be pulled to the flexplate to be bolted up.
bolting it up as is would have caused the transmission not to work.....

To do the initial line up, push the torque converter rearward into the transmission away for the flex plate and spin the converter by hand to get your initial line up. Start a bolt and spin it by one of the other methods mentioned to get the other bolts started and finally tightened. Doc.

Put a socket and ratchet on bolt that hold the front pulley(vibration dampener) and turn the motor with it.

Should be able to remove starter and turn flywheel easily with a large screwdriver or prybar
