I have a simplicity lawn tractor broadmoor 14 hp with the kohler single cyl. cast iron sleeve engine.I am having a problem starting it.The engine starts to crank, but then it stops cranking and makes a whining sound.I think it is the starter motor but I am not sure as I do not know that much about lawn tractors.the old battery was weak(4+yrs old) and I changed it.If not the starter, then what else could it be??? Is it worth it for me to purchase the shop manual? Will that give me the step by step procedure to change the starter(if that is the problem)??? I would appreciate it if someone can help me with this problem. Don

We have had this problem with some Kohler engines and have found that dirt can build up on the starter nose where the gear spins and cleaning will solve the problem. We have also replaced a bendix or two.Go to your kohler dlr and buy a manual for your engine,it will be worth the few bucks you pay.

I have a Briggs and Stratton 12.5 engine that the starter wines but doesn't engage. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
