Have used one of the self darkening welding helmets and found it worked great. Much eaasier to see when striking an arc. What do the rest of you think of them? What brand works the best? Where is a good place to buy reasonably.

I found an auto darkening one made by Krazyarc. Supposed to be used by nascar mechanics or something like that. Very nice helmets, adjustable shade lenses, solar powered, supposed to be real tough. I was gonna order one last month till i found the price was 250 bucks! A well, I'm in college for welding and fabrication so I'm just suck it up and buy one. I'll get my use out of it.

I have seen shields that replace the lense on a regular helmet at the welding supply. I had problems with one of the early helmets because sometimes the photo eye would be blocked by a part of what I was working on and it would delay the darkening by a second and I got flashed more than once. Thanks for all the input. I used one of these darkening hoods at a job last year and since have been wishing I had one. I don't do professional welding but try to keep my old equipment going. The hood I have is the one that came with the welder many years ago. The SaftiGlas looks good. Have seen the ones in Harbor Freight tool catelog but they don't give a lot of info on them. Thanks again for all the input

Just a little info on those lenses. Friend of my strep-son works for one of the companies that has a permit to manufacture them. The cheaper style that are only one shade cost`s them to make, ready for this, about $30.00. Now the fancy ones that go to dark if they fail, are adjustable shade and so on, he said now those are expensive!!! How much? About $40.00 or so!!!! The rest of the cost goes directly to the person that holds the rights to them. He didn`t say it was the one with the patent to it, but they were about one of 4 or 5 companies that had a liscense agreement to mfg. them. I don`t have a problem with anybody making a living, but I`ll be damned if I`ll pay that much!!!!!

I use a Sellstrom Phantom II that I have had for about 5 years. It works great, but I had to add a piece of cloth to have a little more neck coverage. I just got a Huntsman for my son and it also seems to do a very good job. I do a lot of Tig welding on critical areas at low amperage where I work, and we went from an old Speedglass to a new Speedglass. We were getting a quick view of the arc with the old one. If you are going to use it a lot, I would go with the more expensive ones. If you look at one and think it is too flimsy, then it probably will be. Even the cheap ones are a big investment for a welding hood, so I try to buy from where I can get some warranty work if I have a problem. $.02

I have too inexpensive types (different brands) I bought from Harbor Freight. Great deals for the money. I just use them for projects around the house--I'm not a professional welder. I paid between $80-120 for them. I wouldn't weld without them now.

A pro welder would probably laugh at these helmets but they work for me.
