Where to buy/fill torch tanks?

I have a never-used oxy-acetylene welding outfit and would like to try it out. Harbor Freight among others sells new o2 and acetylene tanks at reasonable prices. But I have read that most stores will not fill tanks unless you rent them from the store. I took a new CO2/Argon bottle to my local dealer and the only way he would sell me gas was to take my new tank in exchange for a beat up used one.
Since I will be rarely using the tanks it doesn't seem to make sense to lease them month after month, but buying new ones is no good if they won't fill them! Any ideas?
thanks
Charles

My 2 cents. The Harbor Freight tanks are small and won't last very long. If you are the ocassional welder/cutter you can buy a nice setup for around $400. Spend the money in a good torch that has replaceable parts and good regulators. As for the tanks, I use my local plumbing suppplier and get an acetylne tank made for plumbers for soldering. Abount a 2.5 ft gray tank maybe 6" diam. You can also get oxygen tanks from them that are, I think, 2 cu. ft. These tanks are about 1.5 to 2 ft hi and a little more in diam and are green. Good luck.

I agree with all the other posts. Buy bottles from a local dealer, and swap them out when empty. The reason they shy away from wanting to refill bottles over and over, is that periodically (or every time?) the bottles need to be tested and if they fail the test, or if the bottles are older than a certain date, they are scrapped. Also, get instructions on the proper use of a torch set. They are a valuable tool to use in a shop if used correctly. Good luck

Charles, Like many of the others have said; it may depend on where you live. My dad bought a used set in TX and to get them filled in PA he had to show proof of purchase. I lived in AZ for a bit and I purchased a tank set used; I was not asked for proof of purchase but it was an exchange type of program at all the supply places. I payed to have the tanks certified for the initial start up and I would not have to pay again as long as I stayed with the same supplier. Talk to the supplier about prices to fill different size tanks before you buy; larger tanks may cost less per cubic foot of gas.(built in handeling fee) You may be able to move the small ones around easier, but they all take about the same amount of floor space. You may want to build yourself a tank cart like my dad and I did for his; or you may want to buy a $15 hand truck and some ratchet straps instead. Enjoy!!

If you are going to use it mostly for cutting just buy a oxygen bottle and use propane for fuel. If you buy the bottles from Harbor Freight you will have to wait to have your bottles filled as most welding stores won't exchange bottles unless they are their bottles. Either way don't rent, buy it is cheaper in long run.

Remember never set the acetylene pressure above 15 PSI

Thanks for everyone's concern for my safety. Don't worry, I have done all my homework reading welding books and know about grease/oil and oxygen under pressure, as well as the 15 psi C2H2 limit (that's what the big red line on the gauges are for)!

I think I'll ask my dealer about buying a set of small tanks (for portability) from him. Appreciate the tips. I'm in MD by the way.

Charles, like everyone has said go to your local welding supplier for your tanks. I,would also get a set blow back protectors in case your torch pops back and you have fire in your hose . Try to keep your hoses from getting oil or grease all over them ,but most important DONNOT OIL EITHER GAGE !!!!

Chuck, My tanks are Linde, I bought them over 36 years ago, They can be exchanged at any Linde dealer in the country. But if you don't have a dealer near you,you might buy/exchange locally.Go to a welding supply house and deal with them.
PLEASE!!! get some education on the safety and use of them. There is enough explosive ability in a set of small tanks to level a NEIGHBORHOOD !!

Charles Find a welding supply in your area and buy a small set of tanks from them, and when you need them filled you just exchange them for full ones.
Hear in Mass that's what I do. Most supply companies will only exchange thier own tanks.

Yes,buy them from a supplier in your area, when when empty, they just trade a filled tank for empty, there are not many places that actualy fill the tank you take in.
In some areas you have to have the title to the tanks when you exchange them, they are a hot item to get stolen in some areas.
