Friend of mine inherited this bench grinder that is phase 3. It is rated at 230/460 volts and 1.4/.7 Amps. Can this grinder be changed over to single phase without a degree in electrical engineering? Both of us are pretty simple. Thanks in advance for your help. Steve

Get a VFD from Mitsubishi Automation on eBay. You'll be glad you did. But plan to spend 8 hours studying the instruction book before use if you have no previous experience with VFD's. VFD essentially takes the power you feed it, converts to DC and then makes 3 phase out of that.

Using a static phase converter will reduce the HP by about 1/3
If the grinder has lots of power to spare, that is not a problem, if you are using it hard it might be.
I built a static phase converter for mine 1 1/2 HP Rockwell for about $50.

If you consider replacing it with a new one, take a long hard look at the way the Home Depot type are built. When you compare your Baldor to even the best they carry you will se a big difference in how rigid the wheel covers and tables are.
It might be worth the cost of the phase converter if you are picky.

If you want to go all out, you can buy or build a rotating phase converter, or buy an electronic 3 phase variable frequency drive (VFD) unit and get full power.

If You want to see a REAL JOKE, Look at the Delta 8" bench grinder! Since WHEN is a 1/2 HP Motor only pulling 2.5 AMPS at 110v? It takes almost 30 seconds for the thing to get to speed! They put the same motor in the 8" as they do the little joke of a 6" Should have bought the Craftsman! They have a 7A motor! (and I hate Craftsman power tools!)

I guess I got lucky, and found a Rockwell 10" 1-1/2 HP grinder at a garage sale for $25. $50 to build the static phase converter and away I go.
All cast iron, Wheel covers and tables. So I only get 1 HP, its plenty for my needs.

3 phase motors can't be converted to single phase. You're looking at getting or making a phase convertor.

Thanks John
About how much does a phase converter cost and where would be the best place to find one?

John I'd try a moter repair shop you'll get the right one plus any advice you might need.
Personally I think it may be cheaper to go to home depot and pickup a bench grinder and forget about this one, phase converters are problematic.
just my opinion

I'm John he's Steve.

I've never heard of properly installed PCs being problematic. I know guys who run whole shops full of mills and lathes with them. Just make sure you get a rotary converter.

As far as getting one, Jim's right. A motor shop will be a lot of help. You might want to look into making one if you're looking for a project. 3 phase motors (the main component of a PC) are virtually worthless--you can get a big one for nothing.

Also try the UseNet board rec.crafts.metalworking. They're always willing to help people install or make phase converters.

Sorry John I gets confused easily.
The converter I was refering to was the capacitor type. I've had to swap out a few.
