Need air compressor tank

I inherited an old craftsman dual piston air compressor (circa 1979) that had siezed up. I purchased a new connecting rod and cleaned up the crank where the metal had melted and its good as new--except for one thing.

As I approached 40 psi, my tank blew a hole where there was obviously some internal rust. I need a new tank for this beast.

Cheapest I have found online is roughly $125.00 for a 20 gallon tank. I would like to get something cheaper and even something smaller would probably suffice. any ideas where I can find a decent cheap tank? I looked at the local junkyard for an old water tank but they had none.. the local recycling centers had none either.

Thanks

J.

I don't want to be a wet blanket here.

But a receiver tank for an air compressor needs to be an ASME-certified tank and marked that way.

If nothing else, you will find that your liability insurance may be voided if you have a tank explosion and someone is hurt and the tank was not an ASME-certified tank.

ASME-certified air receiver tanks are designed for that duty, for thousands of load/unload cycles, to have a margin of safety for corrosion and overload, and so forth.

The air bubbles sold for emergency use are just that - for intermittent, emergency use only. Other types of tanks (eg propane tanks, &c) may have the pressure rating but, once again, are not designed or certified for this service.

It's not for me to tell anyone what to do. But I suggest that an air compressor receiver is not the place to be taking short-cuts just to save a few bucks.

i use to have one of those freon can conversion kits. one day while in a junk yard (my favorite stomping grounds) i saw one of the cans that had ruptured (yes even with a blow out plate). i could not beleive how thin the metal was. i chucked mine in the trash and bought a tank. it aint worth getting killed over.

Did you try a large truck salvage yard. There are air tanks of almost every size imaginable, plus they are already tapped for pipe fittings and water drains, also they are usually rated over 200# working press. I've bought them for $20. ea.

Check your local discount auto store, for a portable air tank - you know - the ones you air up and carry out to the low tire... If you don't need a big tank, these would suffice. The only problem I see, is that they typically lack a drain cock, so be sure to out a moisture trap in the line pre-tank.

Ray,
I use an old #100 propane tank. Its been working for 32 years. once a year I turn it upside down an drain the water off. suprising how much accumulates.

I too use a 100# LPG tank replace a rusted out compressor tank. Just remove the valve and 3/4NPT pipe will fit the threaded hole. I also drilled and tapped the tank for a condensate drain after joining the tank and compressor. I know the tank is quite heavy to move around, but it will last longer than me.

Fredrick, I can't supply a picture but I'll describe it. The 100# LPG tank is horizontal with the motor/compressor welded on using the original mounting plate. The 3/4 NPT tank opening is plumbed with galvanized pipe nipple into a Tee. One leg of the tee is plumbed to the compressor and the other is plumbed to a moisture trap, to pressure reg, then quick change connector. That way no additiional holes are needed except for a bottom drain hole I fitted with a 1/4 turn brass drain valve. These tanks are quite heavy, so I welded on the original wheels from the bad tank, and welded a handled onto the compressor mounting plate. BEFORE YOU BEGIN! Remove the valve and invert the tank for a week or so to permit all remains of LPG to escape. LPG is heavier than air so the only that remains is the artificial smell.

I purchased 2 5# propane tanks and am going to hook them together in series somehow for quicker recovery yet still allowing for decent retention.

Worst case scenario is it doesnt work and I'll use some tax money to buy a new compressor.

I'm also going to look at a large truck salvage yard--good idea.

Also looking up surplus center.

Thanks all.

Joe

Not a bad idea, but the max pressure on the ones I have seen at walmart is the 110-125 psi range. I am looking closer to around 155-160 psi to be honest. But your idea holds merit. I have received an email from a board member and am waiting to see if they have a spare tank for sale. I'm also wondering what I can mount my compressor and motor on if I go the external portable tank idea.

Thanks all

Joe

Isn't this Craftsman compressor of yours a single stage? You're not going to get more than 120-130 pounds efficiently.
