I need a portable welder for fence work, as well as building corrals, etc out of pipe. I have an old miller 2E that I have been using, but I get real tired of not having a governor on it. I have been looking at the Miller bobcat and the lincoln ranger 8 and 9. What is the experience with these, and what would you recommend. Most of my welding will be using pipe.

I do a lot a fencing work. I have a hilly Tennessee farm and use a portable welder that mounts to a number of my vehicles. Goes anywhere. Use it to build/repair fences and gates using tubing, and rebar on the spot. The welder is powered by a vehicle engine and by using different mounting brackets in a couple of minutes, I can put it on a number of different vehicles that I own. I use it with a small tractor, a Cletrac Crawler, a large Massy, a 4WD Suburban, and a Murray riding lawnmower.

I have found pipe not to work well as a welding rod, rebar works better (sorry, I could not resist that!!). But I have been using a Miller Bobcat 225G for a couple of years and it is great.
Nag your dealer for a deal. These machines are competetive between brands, mine was under $2000 with 150 feet of lead wire, and 300 amp ground clamp and rod holder.

Just went through the same thing trying to decide which unit to purchase. Decided on the Lincoln Ranger 8 mostly because that is what the welding supply store carried. Didn't see any major differences between the Miller and Lincoln. One thing that the salesman did say on the Ranger 8 is that between the Onan and the Kohler engines he definetly recommends the Onan. They started out with a 16hp Kohler and it didn't hold up so they went with an 18 hp which still didn't do it so I think they are at a 20 hp now to do the same job as the Onan. They use Onan on all of the rental units that they have. Have only had time to use this one once so far but was happy with the way it worked. Previous post was right about tring to get a good deal. Figure up all of the accesories that you will need like the cables and clamps and lots of rods and start haggling. The guy that I was dealing with did a very nice price on a whole package and even took off the credit card fee he would have to pay if I paid in cash. Ended up with a cutting torch hose reel just about for free on that alone. Good luck

I have owned both a Lincoln Ranger 9 with an Onan 18 hp engine, and a Thermal-Arc, T Bird with a 20 hp Honda engine. My recomendation is to go with a Honda Because Onan was very difficult to deal with for warrantee purposes. The Lincoln Dealership would not warrantee the engine componants and after just 6 months of use the Onan engine had to have a valve job done to it, and again before I traded it off it was needing to be done again.
