Varsol is a trade name for mineral spirits.

I have been using one part carb cleaner to four parts kerosene in mine for about 30 years. I guess it is old fashioned and not enviromentally correct, but it was what was recommended by the parts washer maker when I bought it and it has worked well for me since. Only problem is when it needs flushing, getting rid of the old stuff.

have used varsol in mine for about 25 years. Many service stations and hardware stores carry it. Was originally recommended to me by a safety-clean man.

There are a number of good water based solvents on the market now, phone the local NAPA, or other chain type stores and ask what they use. If you want a petroleum based solvent, Stanisol made by Standard Oil is a really good one; similar to kerosene+additives. There again you should inquire at the repair shops to what they use.
