Im starting a farm fencing bizz in the spring, I worked for a fella last season doing custom farm work, alot of the work was fencing, Basicly i learned how its done and now im going out on my own, the ex boss need's some competion, the kinda crap I was witness too would make any one cring,

Any how, we used a 10 hp gas generator, about $500, 2 electric drils $150, and miles of exstenion cord $ a small fortune. I wanna get as far away from that gong show as possible, My bizz is gonna be a one man show with the odd day a labour will assist me, Thats why I want a gas powered drill, seen'm around before. But i don't know where to go to find'm? and how much there gonna cost? How much trouble would it be for a guy to build one outa a used gas trimmer head and maybe an electric drill, might be a bit bulky compared to a proper manufactured one, but if it works

Any thoughts and suggetsions will be greatly appreciated.

This is why one ask's the questions here, good answers. I did not know that gas powered drills do not have reverse.

Late last night after i typed up the post i did a search on the net for gas drills, took forever to get any hits, Ended up finding one at NothernTool.com, $269.00 us. But i did stumble onto something of interest, a 24 v cordless drill, now this is what im after, a drill with guts. HAve any of you tried to drill into treated fence posts, Some are about as hard as a rock. I don't wanna be packing a gen and exstension cords all over a hells half acer, having to drag around the rest of the tools is gonna be bad enough.

Ive used cordless drills before, just your basic 12v, they seemed a little gut less to me, any one use these 24 v's before??

Hey Cowboy, I found something you might be interested in. It`s an attachment that goes on your chainsaw powerhead converting it to a drill. It has a gearbox which automatically shifts to neutral if the bit jams and has reverse when you pull back on the handle of the saw. Looks pretty interesting. I found it in the Cutters Choice catalog, pg43, item # 47301 for 3/8"std and#47302 for 3/8"LP. $179.00 each. You can call 1-888-288-8371 to order or for info. or try the link. Russ

I've used a DeWalt 14.4 with spade bits, boring holes in pressure treated lumber. Good power, adequate battery life. How many holes per day are you talking about? I've never run one from full charge to flat and counted the holes, but I'd guesstimate 20 or 25 holes per charge would be pretty good.

Make sure that 24V drill is a name brand. I've seen Chinese 24V drills sold with less torque and fewer features than "real" 14.4V models.

Now, I have a DeWalt DW995 18V, 1/2" drill. I think it's great. You get arm-twisting power in low range, a high top end, and I haven't charged the battery in a month. Granted, I don't install fence, but it lasts a long time. You might do well to get something like that and a bunch of spare batteries. I paid only $37 for the drill+battery on eBay--that makes it easier to take than one of those gas drills.

One of my friends uses a left handed drill bit attached to the driveshaft of a chainsaw to drill holes in his trees in his sugarbush. Seemed to work pretty well, although left handed drills are rather expensive!

I see what you are saying, but I would weigh the $$/pro's and cons of gas drills to a small generator. Initial investment always hurts the pocket a little. My 2 cents on the situation.

I'd go with a battery drill motor. If the battery won't last all day you could use a small generator to charge it, or you can get a charger that plugs into the cigarette lighter of your truck. Good Luck,
Dusty

Maple syrup producers use them for tree tapping. Sugar Bush Supplies in Okemos, MI carries the Tanaka drill. I don't think they have a web site, but they list three models in their 1997 catalog.

  • TED 210 (1 HP): $400

  • TED 262L (1.3 HP w/gear locking): $430

  • TED 262R (1.3 HP reversible): $500
  • I imagine prices are higher now. You can call Sugar Bush at 517-349-5185.

Dont's want to be telling you your business, but
I have used those gas powered drills in power line
construction, and they are about as dependable
as an ex-wife. They are too under powered, have no reverse, so every time you stick a wood hungry
bit, out comes the pump pliers and you back it
out by hand. Those little motors just don't have enough power to run any kind of wood bit. I know
that generators and cords are a pain but at least
you can get something done with them.

Check out the Echo gas power drill at www.baileys-online.com under the Timber Frame/ Log Home Building Tools heading. It`s a little pricey but still better than what your boss had. Echo products are generally pretty good. www.alamia.com probably has them also. Russ

    Hi CC,

You might want to look at Makita 1/2" cordless. The one I used had a 6v rechargeable lamp size battery but you couldn't hog it down. I wouldn't want to use it overhead either. That was about 9yrs ago so maybe they make it in a lighter battery.

Tanaka makes a decent looking 1/2" gas powered drill, but they charge an arm and a leg for it. I don't think it has reverse, and the gear case appears to be off a cheap electric drill.
Don't know if it will work for you, so you may want to consider renting one to try out before you buy.
My buddy had one for sale, along with a hedge trimmer, in his shop, for 5 years before he got lucky and somebody stold the thing. If you can find a dealer with one you may be able to make a deal. I think Tanaka sticks dealers with the drill as part of their startup pcakage.

Have you tried a power inverter hooked to a pickup or even a 4 wheeler anything with a battery Yuo would have 120 volts wherever you can drive.

Hi All, might as well make an appearance as it's been a while.
On the rechargable drills, someone out in the shop one day put out a challenge that he thought his drill would outdo any he had seen. Someone else said "lets try them". Well, I thought I might as well get in on this cause I had a name brand one and the battery was near new. I had just the place to try them too, old oak barn timber that you can't even drive an eight penny nail in without bending it. We used about two inch wood screws and when the Makita quit, I made it go a little further but that danged old beat up lookin Black & Decker (that had been used a good bit that day with same battery)just kept on going. I found a place that I thought he couldn't drive one all the way in but he just (grinned) and twisted it off. I wish I could remember the model number on it. It was a 3/8"er, same as the rest of them in the contest.
While I'm real smart, I could ask a question here: Do they still make braces and bits? That ought to make those Canadian sunsets more appealing, huh Cowboy?. L8R....Fred OH
