I've got a Mac 1/2 dr. torque wrench, the head stripped on it. I gave it to the Mac man to be fixed. He brought it back today and said it is obsolute and no parts are available to repair it. He would be happy to sell me a new wrench. Some lifetime warranty.

Ok guys as a current Mac Tools Distributor I can tell you that there isn't a lifetime warranty on Torqure wrenches. There isn't a lifetime warranty on torque wrenches from any company. However if the torque wrench has replaceable gears in the head they do carry a lifetime warranty.

I've seen a lot of comments on the snap-on "lifetime policy" and can say from experience that it isn't worth the paper that it's written on if your dealer is a prick. Snap-On gives the final word to the distributor so if he doesn't feel like fixing it under warranty it won't be. With Mac if you feel that you've been wronged then they will try to fix it. Mac is by far the fairest company when it comes to warranty. Craftsman comes in very close second but really lacks the quality.

A torque wrench is a measuring device, and is not a "hand tool" Snap-On, Mac, Matco, S-K, Husky, Proto, Craftsman, etc, etc, etc...all have a "limited warranty" on torque wrenches.

To the fella who was getting three new torque wrenches per year from Seaes, I would think that the replacements were due to the "Satisfaction guaranteed, or your money refunded" policy that is above every entrance to a Sears stor and not the "lifetime warranty" of a Craftsman hand tool

johnny K If I read the original post correctly , he did not say that the wrench was broken, he said that the ratchet was stripped.that is not the precision measuring end of tool.

george,

nowhere in the warranty is there a statement that says "the ratchet mechanism has a lifetime warranty" The reason for this is that the forging for the ratchet extends deep into the measuring mechanism of the torque wrench, and is an integral part of the device. it's not just stuck on the end to make it easier to use.

Most tool dealers will repair the ratchet for a nominal (read that the price of the repair kit) fee. If the parts are no longer available, then no one can fix it.

I personally had this situation, recently, with a Snap-On 250 lb-ft wrench that I bought in the mid seventies. Guess how I fixed it....I had to buy a new one....Ouch that hurt, $230.00 of my hard earned cash!

I do kinda agree that some people tend to use a torque wrencg for a breaker etc but any reputable tool dealer should back up a tool if it has been used reasonably.

Go and read the policies of any of the tool manufacturers.....there is a warranty of not more than one year for torque wrenches, some are as short as 90 days.

A torque wrench is a precision measuring device, and as such, is not considered a hand tool. They must be calibrated and tested periodically for accuracy.

There is only one torque wrench that I know of that has a lifetime warranty, it is the BRUTUS tire and wheel torque wrench, the price is about four to five times any comparable wrench.....Why is that? Because you are paying for your "free lifetime replacements" up-front, when you buy the first one.

Not every too has a "LIFETIME COMMITMENT" to the owner, some items that you can abuse or destroy during use are normally not guaranteed by any tool company. You folks seem to always get the Sears corporate policy confused with the Craftsman policies....Many times the "free replacement" has been given to keep a customer satisfied, not because they were obligated to replace the item.

Sears has always honored the "Satisfaction guaranteed, or your monies promptly refunded" policy that has been in effect since Sears, Roebuck and Company opened for business.

OFF SUBJECT BUT.....
despite their committment to keep the customer happy, the way corporate America keeps going, the way manufacturing overseas continues to undercut American manufacturing, the way politics keep bending trade policy in the favor of imports, I am willing to bet that in the relative near future we will see the end of Sears. Then with the leader gone, the end of "guaranteed forever" on any tools will be next. I didn't think I would ever see the end of Montgomery Wards but I did. Our country is going to crap. On a smaller scale you can see how Wal-Mart is driving small businesses that have served their communities for generations out of business.

I agree, but it is hard to deny people the price savings a Wal Mart offers. We have to stress the added value of keeping smaller stores open to ourselves and those around us.

I agree about Wal Mart, but you might try to call Mac and see if your wrench is really obsolete or if they have a part for it someplace.I dont have a lot of faith in these guys that come around in a truck to sell me tools. They come and go a lot,and they mostly care about making money, not whether you are satisfied. If you do get a part for it or a new wrench, take it apart, pack it with grease and keep it out of a solvent tank.It will last a lot longer tthat way.

Kind of a shame that "the leader" for tool warranties has been and always will be Snap-On, the originator of the lifetime warranty. everyone else including Sears copied the original..... .....

I went onto Mac Tools web site just to see what I could find. Not a word there about a lifetime warranty. In fact, if you dig around through their customer service FAQ, you find out that they apparently now only warranty the tools for workmanship, and at that, it's only *some* of the tools.

Looks like Mac isn't worth buying any longer.

That sux. I think that is the poor judgement of the local dealer, not policy of the company. I agree with other posts, call/email Mac. Raise h3ll. A squeaky wheel gets the grease.

I e-mailed Mac customer service, and they got back to me and said they would send me a prepaid UPS label to return the wrench for repair or replacement. Gee I guess there is a Santa Claus. Thanks for the follow ups.

If I go to Sears with a broken Craftsman tool with the lifetime warranty and the model is no longer made, it has always been replaced with the new model. Sometime good, sometimes bad. I have liked the old version better on occassion. Go to your Mac dealer and tell them Craftsman would give you a new wrench. Good luck. Doc.

My brother in law was breaking his Craftsman torque wrench on average 3 times a year. The last time he went to replace it, they told him that it was his last one, as the lifetime warranty no longer covered torque wrenches. I sense a conspiracy!

I would confirm that they dont warranty the torque wrench with someone higher up. I think they may be telling fibs.

Sounds like a local issue. My Mac. dealer gladly replaces obsolete broken tools with new ones. The techs at the company I work for do BIG business with him, and he treats us right!I have known several Snap-On dealers including a neighbor and the HQ doesn't give their guys any grief over returns.
