Fella down the road has a LARGE Central Machinery floor model drill press for sale. 5 spd I believe low rpm range, weighs about 250#. I have been wanting one for some time (not to old for my wants to hurt). Anyhow, this thing looks like an old Buffalo press and was told they are good.

Press will get occasional use repairing equipment and assembling stuff. He is asking $300. Delta, Sears and some of the others (ebay) IMHO are very flimsy. Comments pls. Thanks

If you want to drill 3/4 to 1 in. holes in metal make sure it will run less than 200 rpm. 150 is better, don't worry about top speed, it will be fast enough.

As Mark says, if it's from their good line its ok. If from China, you won't be satisfied unless your standards are low. I have a Delta that is very well built, very heavy, and all components fit tightly. It was on sale and a good value. You might look at that brand and I've been told Grizzly is a well built brand, although I don't know anything about them personally. The price you have been quoted seems high to me compared to others I've seen but you'll have to decide for yourself whether you think it is worth it.

Hi Shep,
I have a Central Machinery drill press that I use a lot. I bought it used at an estate sale and it must be 15 years old. It is a bench model, but still a large drill. I'm not sure that the quality is that much better than Delta or even sears, but my drill has served me well. It is a little trouble to change the rpm as you have to change the belt on top of the drill to different pulleys. Not too bad though. If you like the price and the drill is in fair condition, I would go with it. Good luck.

Central Machinery is imported from China by Harbor Freight (www.harborfreight.com). I didn't check, but I suspect you can buy a new one for less than that. I have purchased a Central Machinery 10" bench grinder and a 39" wood lathe from Harbor Freight. Wish I had paid a little more and got American-made or at least name brand.

You have to watch what you buy from H-F. The China stuff is absolute crap and not worth scrap prices in most all cases. The top quality products come from Taiwan. If you are looking at something in the cat or on line, you can call with the item number and ask where it is made. H-F is decent to deal with, I only had one problem with an item I purchased. It was a set of large transfer punches, some were missing and the holder was waffled but the box looked fine so it was not done in shipping. I called immediately and they sent a complete new set for free and said I could either keep the old set or toss it because they did not want it back. They also don't show it but they do have a full inventory of spare parts for most equipment they sell. All you need is the item and part numbers to order them and the prices are reasonable. They will charge shipping on parts orders under 50 bucks just as they do with any other order.

I have several other H-F machines made in Taiwan and all of them are of excellent quality. My 10"x14" metal cutting band saw I got on sale for around $600, about half what they wanted for Carolina brand. The Carolina is made in Taiwan as well but is built with sheet metal stampings that don't hold up. The H-F one is nearly all cast iron and has cut tons of metal in my shop. I only use Morse brand blades but the cuts are strait and accurate every time. I bough this one for doing some rough work I did not want to do with my $4500 7"x10" Dake-Johnson. After seeing the quality of the saw and the cuts, the D-J was sold and I have been using the H-F alone for the last 2 years without a hint of trouble.

Just a little FYI, not that I am saying all the stuff H-F sells is great but some of it of equal quality with the top American made brands at considerably lower prices.

If this is from the top end line that looks more like a clone of a Cinci, almost all cast iron and made in Twaiwan, they are well worth the money. If it's the cheaper China made one, stay away from it.

I have one of the large Taiwan made ones, 3 phase machine, all cast iron and it is fantastic. Very tight fit on all the parts and overall excellent quality. Would still be a value at twice the price.
