Recommendation for air line dryer (HVLP paint gun)?

I need a dryer in my air line for painting with my HVLP gun. I tried an inexpensive plastic-bowl type at the compressor but since I have a 50' run of hose, I still have moisture problems (recondensing) at the gun.

Do I need a better separator, a dessicant canister, both, or what? I almost had a heart attack looking at the prices in the Mcmaster-Carr catalog...

thanks
Charles

One other thing you can try to help reduce the moisture is to crack the drain vavle open at the bottom of the tank. If properly set, the air will not leak very much and ocasionaly you can hear a spurt as water is forced out of the tank.

When painting, I leave my drain valve opened slightly to let out oil, and moisture.

Thanks for the tips, I will try relocating the trap further downstream, and also invest in a case of disposable ones at the gun.

Charles , they also make dissposable in line water traps that screw right on to your paint gun. They are to be used in conjuntion with your regular water traps. Having your water trap right at the compressor is part of the problem. Try and locate it farther down the line

I think your current one will work but you need to get it away from the compressor, the air at the compressor is still too warm to let the moisture out. If you can mount the filter 20' or so down the air line the air will be cool enough to separate the water out. I used to have our bowl type seperater on the air compressor and it never seemed to have any water in it but now that it is 15' down the line I have to drain it every couple of weeks in the summer.

Hi Charles,

What the problem is, compressed air is a refrigerant and your 50ft air hose has moisture in it so when the compressed air rushes over the inside airline, the moisture condenses and comes out the gun.

This providing that your moisture removal system is adaquote at the compressor discharge. If your compressor is not portable, you can use a old refrigerator freezer as a air/water condensor/dryer. Keep the freezer at 32F

What you might try is using a shorter airline and installing ball valves on both ends of the 50ft airline, put a vacuum pump on the airline and pump at 29.925hg for one hour, this will boil the water out at 70F, or buy new airline, then purge the airline with dry nitrogen turning off both ball valves traping the nitrogen charge so the airline wouldn't gather moisture when not in use. As long as the airline was kept pressured with nitrogen then it would not have to be revacuumed nor gather moisture.

As you can tell I'm not a painter but am a refrigeration engineer, and I have solved a few moisture rated problems for a few painters.
