I have a 8n tractor or I thought with a 3 speed transmission and reverse. Everything I've been reading shows only 2n/9n with 3 speed and 8n with 4 speed. Is this correct? Did they make a 8n with 1,2,3,R? yes the engine shows a 8n seriel # and with both brake pedals on the same side which is a 8n rearend. I must have a 2n/9n tranny and
After bush hogging for a few hours this weekend in first gear. I returned back to the shed in 2 gear. After placing the tractor in neutral or so I thought and letting out on the clutch the tractor is still in gear. I shifted the tractor into reverse but the tractor bogs down and does not move as if its in 2 gears at one time.Any advise on what to look for after I pull the top cover. I have never been into the tranny.

Sounds like you've got an 8N with a 9/2N transmission. Not that uncommon really.

Right now, you're stuck in two gears. Pull the shifter cover and you'll see how the end of the shifter sets into some slots on three rails. One of the rails is in neutral, two of the others are not. Look at the gears and you'll see which ones are engaged, and how. You will need to pry either of the two that are engaged to release the bind. Then the tractor will be freed up and you can put the cover back on.

The only bad news is that once a tractor starts doing this (jumping the shifter and binding), it tends to keep on doing it and getting worse.
