I have removed the block and head from the tractor, but I can't separate the head from the block. All six nuts are off, but it remains stuck. I soaked it overnight with WD-40 and one side seems to be free, but it won't separate.

Any ideas? ---Jim

Jim, there are a total of seven head studs for a JD "H". There are four across the upper side of the head, and one each roughly at the 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock positions. Those six are of the same size. However, there is another larger stud (named the oil lead stud), which is where the rocker arm oiling tube is attached, that has a large nut that can be missed. That stud is in the exact center left-to-right, and is somewhat below the horizontal centerline of the pistons.

Thanks, Dan. You have it! I missed the oil tube nut. With that removed, all came apart with ease! Thanks again, ---Jim

LOOK FOR MORE NUTS BEFORE YOU BREAK SOMETHING ?
It's been awhile since I had a "H" apart and my
parts book is 4 miles away at the shop, but there
has to be more nuts than 6 because that would only
be 3 per cylinder most engines have 5 or 6 per
cylinder.I do remember that the "H" has one bigger
one in center stud, alot bigger than the rest.
GOOD LUCK and use caution.

IF you have ALL the bolts removed, reinstall the plugs and turn the engine over (assuming its not stuck) and let compression do the job.
Good luck

Admitting my stupidity here, but I had that kind of a problem on a 39 B and discovered after breaking a screwdriver that I had missed a nut in the middle of the head that was covered in oil junk. Once I took it off, no problem at all. This was on an outside stored stuck tractor. Don't have an H to know if there is a 7th bolt on it or not. Hope this helps.

Hi Jim,

If all the bolts are out, lift overhead by the head to where the block is just off the floor, 1/4" or so, pour vinegar in every opening and let gravitiy seperate the two. May take a day or two.
You might want to take a long bolt and install that in the headbolt holes so the block doesn't drop to the floor very hard, anotherwords the bolt will hang the block when they seperate.
