Hello I am a novice trying to thread some 1/4 inch stock, and can't seem to get the die started, are there any techniques or tricks that I should try? Thank you, GJ

Grind a point on the stock. Be sure to use the right side of die, get some cutting oil and have at it.

Put a 30 degree chamfer instead of 45 degree, this will help to start

The 30deg angle(just close is fine) may be made with your benck grinder. Just spin the rod in your fingers and gring the sharp corner off the end of the rod down to about 1/2 the bar dia. This will allow the button die to start easily-if you use the side of the die that has the tapered starting threads, it will cut with the back side but much harder to turn and easier to break. A small amount of cutting fluid or kerosene will help to produce smooth threads.
