I have 2 air compressors with rusted tanks. One is quite large so it would be worth repairing. Short of taking it to a welding shop, anyone had any success with any of the epoxies out there? It looks like a small area of pinholes.

Dump the old tank your life is worth more than the few dollars saved trying to repair the old tank. Compressors have come down in cost. You can pick a 6 hp with a 60 gallon tank at Home Depot for under 400 dollars.

My Uncle had a 30 gal. comressor sitting in the corner of His attached garage when the tank blew up because of rust. Blew the exterior wall of the garage off the foundation and You could see into the basement of the house thru the hole it blew thru the interior wall. THROW THE TANK AWAY AND GET A NEW ONE FROM GRAINGER.

Sounds like a good reason to locate your compressor in an out building or at least behind your shop. Don't use the tank, not worth the risk, you can buy brand new tanks without the compressor from Grainger and others.

Yes, but those tank ruptures took place at several thousand psi. A shop compressor tank tends to go up to 175-190 maximum. Far less of a boom. Many times in fact they split, with no flying parts, just a heck of a scary sound.

You'd be asking for trouble. Not worth the risk.

If you know of any salvage yards where there may be rail road cars it may be wirth while to check them out. I found a pair of rail car tanks this way that were in perfect shape for 40 bucks each, The label on them said they were 3/8 thick wall. they are aprox 150 gallon tanks. I took them apart and kept one and sold the other and made my money back, good luck

A neighbour repaired a compressor tank a while back, worked ok for a bit. It did however blow up while he was next to it breaking his leg.

How about making a new mount for the compressor and piping air into some 50 lb. propane bottles, these are a give away item anymore. Seen it done many times. John in Ne.

One word: Kaboom!

Pinholes are the first sign of a completely rusted out tank. I wouldn't want to risk severe injury to save $$.

I don't think I would take a chance on repairing them, could lose your life if later on they blew up and you were standing near by.

you're right, Farmer Gene. When they develop pinholes, the surrounding metal has rusted away til it's very thin. I've seen two compressor tanks turned wrong side out. Fortunately no one was hurt either time.
