Hello,

I'm a little new to the tractor board, but recently my friends and I decided to build some tractors for "off roading" you see, we all drive 4x4's (Mine's a '77 FJ-40 Land Cruiser, basically a tractor with creature comforts) but there are lots of cool trails for quads that are just too small for our trucks. So.....we're trying to make our own "mini trucks." I have found a Cub Cadet with a HUGE 3 speed transaxle, 5 bolt hubs, and a seized Kohler engine of unknown horsepower. I'm thinking of taking the rear apart and welding the spider gear assembly together for posi-traction, any tips/suggestions on this? Also, if in the event the engine is rebuildable, I'd like to "warm" it up a bit. One of the ways I was considering doing this is finding an emissions air pump from a car and plumbing it to the intake, driving from the PTO pulley on the front of the motor. I'd expect it to work much like a conventional supercharger and put a little more umph in the motor. Another idea of mine was to advance the ignition timing and step up the voltage with an MSD coil I happen to have in my garage. But, back to the drivetrain, is there any way I can get stronger axle shafts and/or a stronger driveline? I've been toying with the notion of four wheel drive, but I'm not really sure about how to go at it. Were there any small tractors made with 4WD? One last question, can anyone give me ballpark on what the gear ratios in my tranny might be? Any help, suggestions or opinions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Matthew C. Hall
