I have a Campbell Hausfield compressor, 10.3 cfm that has been really laboring when it starts, it seems to be running at about half rpm for quite a while, I thought it might be the cold weather but it has been in the low 40's and last winter I used it at -20 below zero and it didn't seem this bad. I have the CH commercial oil in it and it does seem thick when cold. Can I put diferent oil in it? What would you guys suggest? Thanks, Chris

If it is a 220 compressor make sure you are getting power on both of the 110 circuits.

Thanks guys for your help, I think I have narrowed it down to the oil being too thick. it is only one year old and last winter I had the original oil in it, it must have been thinner. yesterday I put an oil heater on it to see if it would make any diference, it did make a noticeable diference, not like summer but better than it was. I am going to move it into another building that I can have a small, heated room for it, as well as look into synthetic oil, I had to go with synthetic transmission fluid in my pickup since I couldn't shift it in the really cold weather very well, now it works like summer almost. Does anyone have any suggestions on oil to use? I want a good oil because the compressor is still under warranty. Thanks again, Chris

Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil is the way to go. A CH service man told me that.

Are you running it through an extension cord?

I agree with the other's regarding the "unloader", But would like to add just one more thing; you may want to check to make certain that your valves are adjusted properly!!

Might have a weak start capacitor in the motor, or a loose belt and as the others said the unloader not working. I used to have problems with my compressor blowing the breaker when temp was -20 or colder in my unheated shop. I cured the problem about 15 years ago by using Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil,5W30 and now 0W30. Starts right up at -35 and no bad effects from using motor oil all those years. I did not know that there is a synthetic compressor oil.

check to see if the unloaded valve is working. Have been using 10-30 im my CH for years. Seems to work very good.

I agree, the unloader valve sounds suspect. I installed synthetic compressor oil to solve cold weather problems and my compressor runs much easier all year.
