Hello all,

I'm about to buy a 155,000 Btu kerosene forced air reddy heater. The price is the cheapest I've seen, ($299). Do they stink? My garage is a 2 stall, but since I have the money for the 155,000 , I am gettin it incase I have to work elsewhere too. I wanna know what anyone thinks about them. Thanks!

Mike

I firmly believe they give you the most bang for your buck. To go one step further, Wally-World ( Wal-Mart..) sells an additive for the KereoSun/wick type heaters meant to be used in the home. Cuts down on smell. Using that I can even burn diesel in mine with no smell. Sometimes it's easier/closer to get diesel than the #1 kero....

My main beef with the torpedo type heater is the moisture it puts out- must not be much of a problem in the drier midwest, but here in rainy western Washington, if you use it in a closed building, pretty soon everything is moist. Course we're never further than a couple degrees from the dew point around here. I ended up getting a good old fashioned wood stove (and an electric furnace to warm things up til the stove takes effect), and have been comfortable ever since.

Hi Mike,

They all stink to some degree as you can not achive 100% combustion. I personally don't like the noise level.

Raident propane heaters also work very well and cost much less and will not make you deaf. Some odor but not bad.

I dont care what kind of fuel you use in them, but they always stink.Be careful with these heaters they burn the oxygen out of the air,and you can get overcome.

Mike kerosene may be a little higher priced but worth it. Check around for kerosene if you're in a rural area Co-op/service stations usually keep kerosene in bulk so if you have your container it costs less than like at Bomgaars,TSC or even Walmart. Less fumes and heat right now. How big a boy are you, sounds like you'll be moving it occasionally, the heater alone probably does weigh to much but 5-10 gallons of fuel does, specially when it slashes from end to end in tank. With the wheels they sure are handy compared to the propane heaters dragging the tank and heater around and less maintainance. Drug an old Queen Bee heater out of my moms old shed, it sat there 15+ years damp dirt floor, blew the dust off and plugged it in fired up with the old fuel and ran fine. my 2 cents chris in Nebraska

Too loud for me, they do warm up a place fast, also who wants to pay $2.00 a gallon for fuel. give me LP gas anytime.

Hey all, my reasoning for the 155 was because, I wont always be in my garage. On saturdays, I'm the mechanic for a local landscaping company, and we have a big barn that I work in, with no heat. I'm also going to try and finish my truck that will be outside this winter (no room in garage). And sometimes I go on housecalls, to big barns or shops, and I dont wanna freeze anymore after this purchase, plus I may have a barn once I move out of my parents house, (I'm 17) (lookin for a old farmhouse) And I really only want to buy one once, plus it has wheels!! Thanks for all the input!
Mike

I use a 155. I bought an inline thermostat and it works fine.I am going to try using #1 fuel because of the expence of kero. Don't know about the fumes 0f #1.

Mike; They work great, got mine at a moving sale for $40 BUT caution is in order!! the FIRE comming out of them will burn ANYTHING near it!! Its good to keep any combustables at least 3 feet away and remember carefull with gas or parts washing stuff I know this is common cense, but sometimes we get "stoopid" and remember they probuce carbon monixide just like running a engine in a closed building so if you feel lightheaded or a headache you are being poisoned. It's good to use them in a "drafty" building they work good for thawing frozen hydrants, warming you when you have a five minute job outside. ( I never had a 5 minute job, just my wife thinks so) I put mine on an old push lawn mower, wheels and a handle! Don't make it too convienent tho' as neighbors like to borrow it lots! and keep the fuel cleen .I use a screened funnel Warm luck!

I have a 55,000 BTU that I use in my Dad's shop . The shop is 20' x 25' with no insulation at all . It will warm it up in about 30 min. . I use kerosene only . I did have to adjust the air/fuel mix when I first got the unit because it really stank and would make your eyes burn . I always crack a window about 6 inches or so to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning .

Good Luck !

Mike I agree with the other two posts. My question, do you need a 155,000 Btu? I have a 50,000 Btu that heats my 2 car garage in Minnesota just fine. The 155 is much louder and uses 3 times the fuel per hour. I am not against buying bigger but have used the 155 in construction for many years in large building projects but never at home. Am not trying to discourage you from buying the 155 if you need it but just wanted to make you aware of it. Good Luck

I have a smaller one, it works great, but like it was said, burn kero not fuel oil and put on ear plugs-very noisey.
