Substitue for Meyer's Hydraulic Plow Fluid (Snow Plow)

Snow season is coming and my old Meyers plow likes to leak oil a little more than it should. Meyer's hydraulic seems to be extremely expensive. Does anyone know of an alternative that isn't so costly works well and won't damage the hydraulics or seals? Might add that I live in Mid-Michigan, so please let me know where the alternative fluid can be purchased if there is one.

Thanks..
Bill

If yor hyd unit is driven by an electric motor on the front of the plow lift frame and uses the blue fluid, I would think twice about using ATF or tactor hyd. fluid for one reason, the blue fluid contains an antifreeze additive to keep moiisture from freezing up in the oil. Moisture can get in these closed systems when a little snow ice gets in your hyd. fittings and you hook/ unhook the plow hyd. Especially a problem if you have solenoid operated valves. If you have an older belt driven Meyers plow pump the other suggested hyd. fluids will work well. I would try a couple different truck/plow equipment dealers to see if they have an aftermarket fluid , also maybe Northern Hydraulics( Northern.com?)

The recommended fluid for my Monarck electric/hydralic unit is Dextron II. Have used that for several years with good results, and there is an advantage that Dextron tends to swell the seals slightly, helping the leak problem. should work on your Meyers.

I would think Universal Tractor Fluid would do the trick unless there is something I am unaware of as to what Meyers uses for fluid. You can get UTF at any farm supply or NAPA store.About $5 a gallon.

CJ is correct as long as the hydraulic oil you choose is 10 weight or lighter. Meyer's oil is a special blend they have come up with to prolong the life of snow plow equipment. It has a good match of viscosity builders, water/moisture barrier and other additives that make it a good fluid.

What you do need to be careful of is to NOT use brake fluid. Brake fluid is only good for brake systems as it can be deadly to any other hydraulic components.

Any good hydraulic fluid will work in Meyer, Western and most all other snow plow systems with no problems. Depending upon the quality of the oil (meaning amount and type of additives used in it) may have some effecct on the life span of the unit.

Best option is to cure the leaks and use the Meyer brand oil. Seal kits including a new cylinder rod are not that expensive if you do the work yourself. If you don't have a a good working knowledge of the system, don't touch it till you do. Some Meyer's systems use internal electric over hydraulic solenoid controls and these can get touchy if you have never worked around them before. Been a while since I did any of these but I think Meyer uses some Vickers components but can't say for sure. A shop done rebuild, depending upon the amount and type of parts needed, should run no more than about $100 to $250 including labor. Someone familiar with these systems should be able to do a full rebuild in about 1 hour. FYI, normal shop rates should not exceed $65/hr and make sure they do the work and actually replace the parts they say they are replacing. Get a receipt too.

I personally agree with mike about the AT fluid. Mark is absolutely right about NOT using brake fluid. Some people think that because it's "hydraulic" brake fluid, it will work in hydraulic systems ...wrong....! Brake fluid is alcohol (not petroleum) based and it will really raise havoc with the system. I repaired a floor jack once where the guy added brake fluid; The mess inside was nearly as nasty as the "blob" from the movie of the same name.
