Help! Offered to fix a seniors Husky 272XP saw for him - he said the coil was dead and had tried another from a neighbors saw and it worked. Lucked out and got an old one from a repair shop cheap because the engine had cratered but when I put it in - no spark. Finally ordered a new one - put it in -no go. Whats up? These are the external to the flywheel coil w/2 leads - one for the plug and one for the switch. Super simple. Gap good, magnets seem OK. What am I missing?

To be quite honest I am at a loss. When you get this thing fixed let us know please. In your original post you said that you borrowed one and it ran. Have you tried your parts on the other saw to see if it would run with the parts you purchased?
I would be game for that.

Hi Neil,

I would look at a bad ground on the sparkplug?

If the coil had two simular leads then try the other lead to sparkplug?

Bad switch?

Bad sparkplug?

It's got to be something simple as you had it running with another coil.

Hi Hand an old echo that did that sometimes. Wire from switch got a bare spot in it and would ground out and start after a while. Check the flywheel key also.

Thanks for the reply, Scott. Actually don't even have the switch wire connected so thats out. Even when the magnets pass over the armature, it generates no juice so if the flywheel key was sheared, there should still be a jolt. Not familiar with this ignition system and how it creates a field and breaks it abrubtly without the use of points or CDI. Anybody know if it has to do with the 2 magnets in the flywheel?

One other thought is this an old saw? The bearings seem ok in the crankshaft and not letting the gap get out of wack? Scott

The saw is a 1994 and still in good shape. The bearings don't seem to show any slop or play at the flywheel end.

Is there only one coil or is there a coil with a module somewhere else. Husky did use a coil and separate module on many of its saws.
