I have several old Dovetec corn stoves in use. I heat a 40 X 56 work shop with one and my house with the other. A neighbour ( a farmer and mechanical engineer) and I have modified them with plate heat exchangers and put the system under vacuum, they are as effiecent as the new high effiency furnaces and no smell as they are under vaccum. The shop is kept at 60 all winter on about 80 pounds of wheat per day. The house on about the same. We have used corn, wheat and rye for fuel all have worked well. Some of this has been free as waste grain.

We are currently building a flue which will help cause a natural draft so there is no smoke in case of a power outage.

I bought and installed a pellet stove in a house I lived in before. Went from wood stove to pellets as good wood was getting hard to find in my area of the country. It was cleaner than the wood stove but not a lot. The one I had was made by Earth stoves and you could get a firepot to butn corn also. Thought about doing that but where I live they don't havest the dried corn as they do in the midwest. Have also been told that you will get more heat with corn. Overall I wasn't that sold on the pellet stove. Went to gas in the hose we remodeled. Pellets hould be cheap as they are made from waste material but they aren't. I also found that there was a difference in the way different brands burned and how clean burning they were. Good luck on it which ever way you go.

I think you would be happier with a stove that burns corn rather than wood pellets. We have one of these stoves and have burned both wood pellets and corn. The corn burns hotter and is cheaper to buy. We burn about a bushel of corn a day or 40# of wood pellets in the same length of time. Corn is selling for around $1.70 a bushel and wood pellets are around $3.59 for a 40# sack. A corn burning stove will burn wood pellets but a wood pellet stove will not burn corn due to the extra heat from corn. HTH Don

I must have had to many beers, my math is all wrong, Pellets are $174.00 a ton, not $1.74 a bag

sorry about that

Talk to your local fire department. They'll have all the national codes, and will more than likely be happy to do a free inspection once it's installed. Big thing is clearance to combustibles for the stove and any interior smoke pipe. NFPA 311 is the controlling code. If you buy new, the stove must, by law, include very specific installation instructions giving all the necessary distances.

If you go with a wood stove (my preference, don't like pellet stoves) make sure the area in front of the fire door is protected as well. The installation T shows is a tad skimpy for my tastes, you get to poking around stirring up the coals and tossing a fresh stick in, you can wind up with hot embers on the carpet. Not good. Tends to make the boss cranky...

I saved a copy of that, gonna print it out and post it on the bulletin board down at the firehouse!

I've seen some stuff nearly that bad over the years. My favorite is the folks that had a wood stove plumbed into a chimney on the first floor, and the old thimble in the same chimney on the second floor was blocked off with a piece of cardboard and then wallpapered over.

David,

You may want to consider a woodstove also. They'll work when the electricity goes out.

I didn't know much about about putting a stove in my house either. I had some buddies give me a hand.

For an easy way to start a wood fire, get a quart jar and put in BBQ briketts, fill with lighter fluid, then take three or four and place in a row, light the middle one and load the wood, green or dry, and forget it, it will get going fast H-D
