I am looking for a good coil tester. Specifically I am looking for a coil tester that tests the coil under full output. If you have one you want to get rid of, or know where I can find one, I'll pay a fair price for it.

Thanks

Jim- Snoop around the older auto repair shops and see if you can pick up a Sun Scope tester. The 920, 1020, and 1120 models had the coil test feature. They will do points type coils, transistor type coils, and magneto coils, with a variable in/out power control knob. They also had a condenser tester feature, that gave a reading of condenser capacity. That info was helpful to correct problems where the points were transfering metal from one contact surface to the other.

The procedure was to test primary and secondary resistance for shorts and opens. From there the coil was powered up and the output displayed on the CRT screen. The operator compared the scope pattern with ones in the instructions book and got an excellent idea about what condition the coil was in.

If you do much ignition work it will be a good investment, for yourself and your customers. Yes, I'm a former Sun field rep. ;-) Good luck, IHank

IHank, I hight have to look at a Sun Machine, and I would definately like to have one. However, I have one problem with a good diagnostic scope, and that is I have no where to keep one. And as such I am looking for a bench-top model.

I do want to be able to test condenser leakage also. I definately like to use a scope, as it tells me a lot about the condition of the whole engine, not just the primary and secondary ignition systems. I can look at a scope and see weak cylinder, sticky valves etc. I also like a cylinder balance test. I miss not having these tests, but You can't keep a good scope under a shade tree. :(

Well, I can at least dream.

Thanks

Jim
