I've just been given an old belt driven DC welder generator. I want to hook it up to a 11hp B&S motor. Need to know what RPM to turn generator so I can get proper sized pulleys. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Drill

Hi Buddy.
Generally speaking, An 11 hp B&S isnt enough as if it is an very old unit originally powered by tractor PTO, it will turn about 560 rpm and takes a lot of power so were looking about 20 to 30 hp with a 4 inch pully on the motor and about 10 to 11 inch pully on the generator to get it up to about that speed if it is a 4 pole generator.
If it is a 2 pole, you need to get the speed up to around 3600 rpm so you should be looking about 180 amps coming out of it as I am basing this with an old time lincoln welder which was origonally powered by an Lycoming or Reo or Waukesha engine, I have had a number of them and worked great with an Wisconsin V4 with the electric start or even an handcranked kind. If you give up, I might buy it so to save you some headaches Harold Stotts

Hi Drill,

If it's a 2-pole then it's 3600rpm
4-pole 1800rpm

Thanks T_Bone, its a 4pole so I'll go for same size pulleys.

It probably is a 3600 rpm machine, that was pretty common in the older ones, but look at it, there may be a tag on it with info. LGD
