I am having a major problem trying to weld inconel pipe together. The buffoons I work for ordered this stuff and now they want me to repair it and its not working out. I am using a square-wave TIG machine with 2% thoriated tungsten. I am getting cracks and porosity. The weld metal appears to be full of impurities and does not flow evenly. It is also nearly impossible to cut. I was just wondering if anyone has had experience with this exotic tubing and what I might be doing wrong.

Hi Scott,

Sounds like the wrong cover gas. Try Argon75% Helium 25% with a good gas flow 20cfm.

99% of porosity is wrong cover gas or incorrect flow of cover gas.

Use only a "new" SS wire brush for precleaning and post-cleaning.

Have fun!

Hi Chuck , I work nights at an industrial boiler factory. We machine and weld inconel. I am on the machining end of it. After reading your post , I called one of the welders at home. Here is what he said: Make shure material is very clean. Set puge gas on tig torch at 12 CFM. You will need 20 CFM of purge gas inside pipe for root pass. No more than 80 - 85 amps on tig machine , useing 3/32 rod. The cooler you run it , the better. 250 degrees preheat. Make shure fan from tig machine is not blowing purge gas away while welding. He says that inconel is nice to work with. One of the tubing size we use is 2-1/2" OD x .135 wall. It is over $100.00 per foot. Hard on tooling. If you have any other questions , feel free to ask.
