We built our own using real channell iron. It's a honey. The most expensive ingredient may have been the three hole saws we used up to make the holes for the 1 inch bars holding the bottom plate assembly.

Have a 12 ton and am satisfied, shure comes in handy, jack is forien made and not repairable but if it ever goes bad just find anouther cheep jack of same tonnage

The prices on Harbor Freights presses are very tempting, and they are probably worth what you pay for them. But, buyer beware. I saw these presses in one of their stores, and they were much lighter than what I had imagined from the picture in the catalog. If I remember right they are made from channel shaped metal (much thinner than a traditional channel iron) that I believe was about 4" wide (maybe less). I don't think they would take anywhere close to 12 tons, but never used one. Just passing along what I observed.

I had a 12 ton press from them for about ten years, I used the heck out of it. I sold it to a friend and he still uses it. Some of the stuff they sell is not so good, watch what you buy from them. Good luck

I buy some tools from Harbor Freight, you just have to look at it closely. Most all of their equipment is made in China. Some is good quality, some is junk.

Tom, I have bought some stuff from Harbor Freight. I like some of it and some, I don't. They sell junk as well as some quality things. I haven't bought a press, but the other replies think the presses are o.k.
I am pretty sure that Harbor Freight is just a retail outfit and don't actually make anything they sell, but just guessing. Keep an eye on the brand name. I know they sell Central Machinery products and I kind of like them for standard quality. You can buy better or less quality if you want it. Good Luck

I have a 20 ton from harbor frieght . You would think it would be engineered to where the jack would give out before the frame bent, but noooo... I had my eyes on what I was pressing and didnt see the top cross member bending to the shape of an "A". That narrowed up the uprights to where the moving parts are binded. If you get one weld in a stronger top cross member.

Yes the top cross member is the weakest link. Other than that I like mine ok.

I have a 20 ton press, it didn't come from Harbor Freight but was bought locally. All of the presses are pretty much the same unless you get into the really expensive units. There are somethings that just can't be done with out a press, other things are just eaiser, or you have less chance of breaking something.

I have bought many tools from Harbor Freight and have never had any problems. Another place to check out is Homier Distributing. Sometime their prices are better. But Harbor Freight seems to have the better shipping and handling prices, especiallly for sales over $50.00.

I have their 12 ton press. Had it about 20 years, still going strong. It has it's limits being only a 12 ton, but it has been great for light duty transmission and differential work. Doc
