Well, here goes one of yt's longest threads....

What would you guys recommend for a rig to go haul in tractors? I got access to a 1700 International, but it's too big. Looking for a One ton pickup that wont raise any suspicions when I bypass ports of entry. Also need 4x4 and plow. I've looked at Fords, Dodges, and Chevys. It would be nice to buy a cummins Dodge, but seems they are a Minimum of 10K here for 200k mile trucks, while 7K will buy a 88 F-350 Diesel with 99,ooo miles. Are the Dodges that much better? (Will be pulling a 2 or 3 axle trailer, with brakes of course..)

How about it guys? What should I get for $3000 to $8000.00???

owned a chev with a 454
owned a dodge cummins
own a dodge v10--it cost less to run then the cummins, and cost 4,500 less up front. it will outpull any ford (yes even them fuel hungery power strokes) chev. or dodge with a cummins.

dodge cummins-rated at 18,000 tgvw
80.00 for oil change
100.00 for tune-ups
4,500 for the engine up front (takes 70,000 miles before you even save that up in fuel)
top speed with 411 gears and a five speed 80
gvw 800# less than the v-10 (engine weight)
20 mpg empty at pedal to the metal (80mph)
10 mpg towing 13,000# at pedal to the metal (80mph)
32.00 for air filter
23.00 for fuel filter

v-10-rated at 19,000 tgvw
30.00 for a oil change
18.00 for tune-up (spark plugs)
14.00 for air filter
no fuel filter
13 mpg empty p-t-t-metal (cumputer kills engine at 110 mph
7-8 mpg with that 13,000# trailer and i cannot keep the siding on the trailer due to the wind blowing it off at -- well lets just say FAST.
356 gears and a auto

best truck i have ever owned

we were looking for a ton diesel to haul tractors and ran across aihc low profile for about the same money. was used to haul travel trailers,20 ft deck, winch and extras. we pull our travel trailer and load a cub and a pulling tractor. it has lots of miles but few problems, sure drives nice on long trips. we use it on the farm too to haul or pull lots of stuff.

I like the new Ford SUPER DUTIES, but like the Cummins in the Dodge. I own a Dodge (FOR SALE) & am satisfied, except for the GVW, but can only get heavy enough in a 1 1/2 ton truck. It comes down to preference. I also own a '74 chevy. excellent puller, but gas-hog. My personal preference is IH, but they are gettin' hard to find parts for! :>)
