I am interested in painting my own tractors. I am looking at a HVLP gun, that requires 15- 50 PSI, at 9.5- 14.8 CFM. What type of compressor do I need? Thanks for your help.

Oh my gad! This is almost too much- single, double, 5 Hp, 60 gal, 80 gal.etc, etc.

Why not just get a "CRAFTSMAN" & be done with it.....
That ought to get 'em started.....

Chris, I am going to tell you the same thing as most everybody else. Spend all you can afford on a compressor. I bought an Emglo compressor about 5 years ago. It is a 5HP 4 cylinder 2 stage pump. It delivers almost 22CFM at 100PSI (not 90). The pump is all cast iron including the heads, and is hand assembled one piece at a time to ensure clearances are within spec. They are online if you want to look them up. Also if you are anywhere cloe, they are located in Johnstown, PA. Don't listen to these guys that tell you a single stage is as good as a 2 stage unit. If that was true then nobody would build a 2 stage.

one stage vs. two stage; An engineers view.
Energy in must equal energy out. (Period)
The energy comes out as usable (the work the air pressure and flow can do), and usless (the heat generated).
A two stge compressor will generate more haet than a one stage, but will raise the air to a higher pressure.
If the added pressure is usefull to you (or you are limited by tank size) a two stage is the best choice. If not a one stage will give you the same or slightly more air at the same energy use (HP rating, if the vendors tell the truth).
A one stage will run cooler while delivering the air, and in theroy last longer.
PS, when comparing compressors compressors remember at 175 PSI a tank will hold aproximatly 1.4 times what the same size tank will hold at 125 PSI. E.G., Compare a 60 gal 175 PSI two stage to a 85 gal 125 PST single stage of equal HP.

I can see your point, but let me add that my two stage compressor has 4 cylinders to pump air and it only runs at 900 rpm. The only way these single stage compressors can put out half of what mine does is to run fast. Bad news for your heat theory, more speed = more heat. You can find a down side to everything if you look hard enough. If you want a compressor that will do the task required and have longevity, buy 2 stage.

I disagree with the 2 stage compressor hype. A good single stage like the I-R 5SSL w/60 gallon tank gives you 18CFM with 1/3 the heat and wear an tear of a comparable 2 stage. Also, If you run the I-R synthetic oil it is rated for continous duty. I purchased this unit and love it compared to my 175 psi 2 stage w/80 gallon tank.
This baby gives me 135 psi which is all I'LL ever need even with my service station type hoist. All for 800 bucks thru Grainger.

My best advise is to get the largest splash lubed air compressor you can get, I have used the "oilfree" units and they arn't woth there weight and they will drive you fruity with the noise levels. I plan to purchase a unit from Loew's (Spelling??)and that will probably take care of anything I will need for now. You might want to check with "T.P. tools" they seem to have reasonable priced unit's that should be big enough for youre needs.

My best advice is to get the biggest best compressor you can afford. You'll want a compressor in the upper end of the gun requirements. If the compressor has to run hard it will create hot air with moisture in it and a drop of water can ruin a paint job. Most of the cheaper 60 gallon compressors are only single stage and will have a short life compared to a better cast iron two stage pump. Plan on spending $600-$1600 for a good compressor that size. I-R, Quincy and C-Aire all make good commercial duty compressors.

Big and oil-lubed. Not much else to say if it can deliver around 7-10 CFM at 90 PSI. Of course, you can get away with a lower output pump if you have a larger tank.

You will have to check the ratings on the compressors to see if they match . You may want to look at the HVLP gun sold by Harbor Freight for around $ 70 . Wood magazine rated it a best buy and gave it pretty high marks . I believe the air consumption is less than the gun you are looking at .

I used a $25 Tiawanese siphon feed gun to paint my tractor and spray a lot of woodworking projects I have made over the years . It did a really good quality job . I run it from a 3 HP oil bath compressor .

Good Luck !
