I know this has probably been asked before, but I am thinking of buying a pressure blaster for projects around the home place. There are several sizes of these blasters including 40lb, 80lb, and 100lb capacities. How long could you typically blast with 40 lb of sand? Is it worthwhile to buy one of the bigger ones?

Thanks,
JohnP

It all depends on how big the project and how often you plan on using it. I have a 40#'er from Harbor Freight that I bought to restore a Farmall Super M. I've had problems with contamination in the sand I was using,(fine grit from Home Depot). When I get through that, I'm sure it will be adequate. It just means you are going to stop to fill it up more often - 40# doesn't last too long, but I'm pleased with the job it does when it works.

How long does 40# last if it doesn't clog? I am thinking of work on an old horse trailer. If it's enough for your M it might be enough for me too.

I estimate I probably get 20+/- minutes out of a fill. I've decided I'm not bringing that thing near the tractor - only doing the parts that I can take off. It does a good job but I don't want any of that grit near any seals. The tractor I will do with wire brush, needle scaler and power washer. A long time ago I rented a sandblaster to do a boat trailer - I think it was an 80 cfm unit that you tow. That really made quick work of it. If it is a one - shot deal for you - that might be the way to go.

I find a 50lb bag lasts me about 30 minutes of actual blasting. Sift it through window screen. I one time tried to rush a job by not sifting my bagged sand and ended up having to disassemble the whole thing to clean out the sand. Anything bigger than the nozzle will block it. It is annoying enough to clear a nozzle but more so to empty the tank. Check out TP tools, they sell quality equipment for good prices.
