Name of head screw

I'm looking for a certain screw that can be used for wood that I've seen primarily used in metal applications. It's a type of head that can screw into things, but you can't back the screw out. The screw head "ramps up" when you want to turn it counter clockwise. Does anybody know what these screws are called and if they make them for wood?

Thanks
Branden

Thanks a bunch guys. You answered my question, and gave me some good feedback. I'm needing about a dozen or so, but I need to see if I can get them specifically for wood or not, or I might just try that "roberts" head type of screw. Thanks again.

Call them tamper proof screws. You should be able to get a hardware store to order them for you, or find a welding or machine shop that orders through McMaster-Carr, I used to get them through their catalog.

You can order directly from McMaster Carr, they will deal with the general public. Go to www.mcmaster.com to look through their online catalog. Tons of neat hardware! You can order on a charge card and they ship the same day. They call these screws "one way screws" also. Didn't see any specifically for wood, but they have various sheet metal types that may work. Otherwise, how about using square drive screws? Easy to get, yet your average vandal won't carry a square driver in his pocket.

Yes, I order through their web site. They have the whole catalog on line. They take charge cards and don't require a business name. I was surprised too, after trying to deal with Grainger, who WON'T deal with a non-business. I just got some items this week from McMaster Carr.

Haven't tried Grainger online. I'll have to check it out. I have a feeling that they still won't deal with you.

branden they are tamper proof screws. i have used a ton of them. they are usually used in public restrooms and buildings so some idiot kid wont be taking the toilet partitions apart or the fixtures off the wall. you can probabbly pick some up at a real nut and bolt supply house or a commerical speciality supply house. i doubt your local home depot or lowes would have them.

how many do you need? what size? i might be able to scrounge up a couple left over from some jobs somewhere.

If you can't find them, you can make your own. Just use a phillips head and drill out the center when you have it in place.

I have an old screwdriver that does this automatically for me. Until I realized this feature, I though it was just a dull screwdriver.

Tamperproof slot head screw. Many different types of screws with tamperproof heads are made, all I know of are metal screws or bolts.
