I am curious to know how DeWalt Power Tools have stood up for all you others. I will say that so far I have not had any bad experiences with their tools. I am just wondering what some of your experiences are and what stuff have you heard about them. Thanks in Advance
Mike

I have had switch problems with Dewalt, also. They actually sell quite a high volume of replacement switches at one hardware store near me.People around here like Dewalt, because they are more available, not because they are better. Milwaukee has some of the best tools anywhere, for any price. I don't worry about burning out switches. My preference is for Milwaukee sawsall, cordless and corded drills, hammer drills and circular saws. Porter cable routers and plate joiners. Makita miter saws. Bosch jig saws.Metabo is tie or better with milwaukee in angle grinders, chop saws and nibblers. Just my opinion

I used to be a test lab engineer for B&D in their power tool and accessory division. This gave me a pretty fair bit of experience with the DeWalt line.

As another pointed out, it looks just like a comperable B&D, just in yellow. This is partially true. But where the B&D tool is likely to have things like sintered powder gears and covers, the DeWalt is more likely to have machined gears and cast covers. Brushes and armatures are B&D stock.

This means that typical wear items like the gears and covers last longer with the DeWalt vs the B&D equivalent. The DeWalt will also typically have the nicer handwheels and such.

It's been a B&D goal to repair their image with the DeWalt line. B&D did themselves a lot of damage by getting into junk tools, and created an image of being a cheap junky tool maker. They planned, and have succeeded, in keeping the old DeWalt name associated with quality. This was shown regularly in the labs by the results of the testing. It was also an unwritten rule that no B&D tool would exceed the performance of a DeWalt.

I personnally own several DeWalt tools; supersawcat, SAG, etc, and have been well pleased with them.

I have a 1/2" DeWalt DW995 18V drill that I really love. Powerful, really heavy, good quality. I use it whenever I don't want to get an extension cord. It drilled a 1/2" hole in cast iron like it was butter. The past part was that I bought it on eBay for $47 with charger and battery.

I also have a Makita 9.6V drill (the first one to use battery packs instead of magazines), a Makita rciprocating saw, and an orange Makita sander. The drill's batteries don't hold a charge like they use, and the switches in the saw and sander both went, but it's nothing considering their age.

Overall, I would say DeWalt is just slightly below Makita, quality wise, and that Milwaukee is above both. Of course, DeWalt stuff cost a lot less than the other two, so it's my choice.

Are you guys SERIOUS they really do make other power tools other than Dewalt. LOL

Yes Dewalt tools have a very solid rep.
and I will continue to buy them.

Replacement parts and the tool itself are cheap
compaired to the other brands.

I have several dewalt power tools, they are a pretty good value for home owner type use. If you need heavy duty power tools to use every day go with the best Milwaukee!

I traded my DeWalt chop saw in for one of their new MULTISAWS. Let me tell you- It will flat cut anything you put into it! I use it mostly for mild steel!!! If you've ever used an abrasive chop saw your gonna love the MultiSaw - No sparks, now fuss, nothing but a SUPER TOOL!

I've also got a collection of all DeWalts 18V tools which have served me well. I Esp/ like the 18V Hammer Drill. Don't think I'll ever need to plug a drill in again!

Check prices on Ebay - you may save a bunch.

Finally, I also really like Milwaukee, Porter & Mikata. They all seem to do well!

I'm a self employeed cabinetmaker and the Dewalt's are a good value. The tools I use the most of I buy a higher quality, Have a Metabo Jigsaw, Milwaukee 10" miter saw, Porter Cable circular saw and routers. My Dewalt 12" compound miter works well and easy to operate, I dulled the mickey mouse stock blade pretty quick and put on a 80 tooth everlast. Switch went out in my 4" dewalt grinder after a year and I have a dewalt jigsaw that just will not stay in the orbital mode. I guess when you don't want to spend a fortune on a tool that is not used daily they are a good value. I try to stay away from them when I can afford a better tool. I do have an old Makita 3/8" drill, when they were orange plastic instead of blue, and that thing just will not die, have had it probably 15 years. I have to say the Metabo is probably the smoothest running tool I own and would definitely buy more of their product. Johnny

But you can buy 10 dewalts for what you pay for a metabo;then when one goes bad you can throw it away and use number 2 etc. for years to come.

Wrong, you can only buy 2 dewalts for the price of a metabo, maybe even less on ebay, In my business you don't get paid until the job is finished, last year when I had a switch go out in a Dewalt grinder I had to buy another to finish the job, this set me back a half a day, and probably cost me a hundred bucks in lost wages, on some tools you need the best you can buy. The Dewalt's are a decent value and work well for the weekend warrior and occasional user but on the tools I absolutely have to depend on, buy something else. Oh, BTW the switch on my Dewalt 12" compound miter started hanging up on me today, the saw just runs wide open and will not shut off, guess I'll be replacing that switch too. Johnny

I have a dozen or so DeWalt power tools, some 5-6 years old. I'm very happy with every one of them. I've replaced a power cord on my 4" grinder, and a part on my 12" chop saw (can't remember what it was) both of which get pretty tough use. I find with quality to be excellent for the price, and will buy DeWalt again when I need a new tool. I also have a few Makita tools, and find the DeWalt stuff to be their equal at a better price.

I am genuinely pleased that so many have had such success with the Dewalt tools. I have several of the Dewalt tools. Had a problem with my jigsaw ( maybe model DK 321) not holding blades after very little use. Asked Dewalt a simple question about it and essentially was told that it is my problem and good luck with a solution. Every thing bought since then has been Milwaukee or Bosch.
