I've tried spraying enamel tractor paint (thinned 20%) and it splatters on. I've tried adjusting air pressure up and down, thinning more, holding my jaw different, but I don't know what to try next. Please advise.

Also, make sure you strain the paint...

I made that mistake just "once"... :)

sounds like you are using the wrong thinner, every paint has a recommende thinner that must be used for it to spray right.

I once, a very long time ago, had a fishing buddy who told me that the reason I wasn't catching as many trout as he did was that I didn't hold my mouth right. Never did quite get the hang of it.

Your splatter is presumably paint that isn't fully atomized. Is there a leak around the top of your pot? My HVLP adjusts with a ball valve just at the end of the air hose. If I don't have quite enough air going to the pot, it won't atomize well. But you shouldn't need to have it wide open if your finish has the proper viscosity.
The only way, other than experience, to test the thinning necessary is to get a zahn cup that has a measured outlet hole. You time the emptying and thin the product accordingly. Autobody suppliers can sell you a cup. I assume you also know the two other adjustments on the gun and have tried adjusting them. These are pattern, by moving the tip (including in and out), and volume, by adjusting the screw just over your palm.

Something to try is to spray something a LOT thinner, like straight thinner, and see if it atomizes.
