I'm interested in purchasing a small mig welder but have no experience in this area as I have never owned one and know nothing about them.

I need it to do small repair jobs and in general tinkering.

At this point I'm very confused: ????
Lincoln, Century, Hobart, Miller, 115v, 230v etc.

Any suggestions as to pro/cons re: different mfgs/models, prices, durability etc?

Any recommendations for a specific Mfg/Model?

I found 2 that I am considering: Hobart Handeler 135 for $430 (Alumn Windings), Miller 135XP for $535 (Copper Windings)?

Are these good prices?
Any Pros/Cons?
Thanx
Chopper

I was told that there is now no difference between a Miller and a Hobart by the dealer who sold both. Parts interchange from 2000 models on. I got a Hobart Handler 135. Blue color was $100 extra.

In a workshop I attended before I bought another dealer said that Lincolns are popular in the Mid West but Millers (and now Hobart) are popular in the South East in case you ever want to sell that might matter.

Got a Century 155 for about $450, with gas kit. Get the biggest unit you can. Mine takes up to 20 amps at 110v AC - requires a special outlet, (included). Is a good welder - wish I was!
Watch the sales - you can get significant savings if you're patient.

I have a Hobart 135. It will allow gas shielding if you want, although I don't use it on mine. Might do that eventually. Probably biggest 110volt welder you can get for the money. I like mine a lot. $430 is good price. I think Miller and Hobart are now same company. One bought the other, I forget which is which.

Hey CHOPPER, I HAVE A 110V LINCON SP-125 THAT I AM VERY PLEASED WITH. IT IS GREAT FOR SMALL STUFF JUST MY OWN OPINION BUT I WOULD GET THE GAS SET UP WITH IT WHEN YOU GET ONE IT MAKES A MUCH NICER AND EASIER WELD. THE ONLY DRAWBACK TO THE GAS SHIELDING IS IT DOES NOT WORK REAL GOOD OUTSIDE IF THE WIND IS BLOWING. CALM WIND OR IN THE BARN/SHOP IT WORKS GREAT. I BOUGHT IT FROM A WELDING SUPPLY AND THEY HAD BEEN USING IT AS A DEMO. I HAVE WELDED UP TO 3/16 WITH IT ALL THE WAY DOWN TO SHEETMETAL. IF YOU DO GET THE GAS SETUP GO WITH A CO2/ARGON MIX IT IS CHEAPER AND WORKS VERY WELL.

MY .02 WORTH
GOOD LUCK

I also have a Lincoln 125. I am very happy with it. I don't use gas so I can take anywhere. Mine cost $250 at Home Depot 4 yrs ago.

TO BE HONEST WITH YOU CHOPPER I DONT REMEMBER BUT IT WAS AROUND 475.00 OR SO. I USED IT A COUPLE OF YEARS WITH OUT GAS W/FLUX CORE WIRE. I ADDED THE GAS ABOUT 3-4 MONTHS AGO AND IT A DIFFERENCE OF NIGHT AND DAY. SO MUCH EASIER AND CLEANER WELDS NO SPLATTER. I BUILT ME A CART OUT OF SQ TUBING FOR THE WELDER TO SET ON AND FIXED A PLACE FOR THE BOLLTE TO STAND IN. I DONT KNOW THE # SIZE OF THE BOTTLE BUT ITS ABOUT 3 FT TALL. IT WAS THE SMALLEST SIZE THEY LEASE OUT. THE REGULATOR KIT DID NOT COME WITH MY WELDER I HAD TO BUY IS SEPERATE AND COST ME ABOUT 60 BUCKS. ALSO KEEP IN MIND THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT KINDS OF WIRE TO USE WITH OR WITHOUT THE GAS. FLUX CORE W/O, SOLID WITH
I THINK YOU WOULD BE ALOT HAPPPIER WITH THE PERFORMANCE WITH THE GAS. I KNOW I KEEP SAYING THAT BUT YOU JUST CANT BELIEVE THE DIFFERENCE IT MAKES.

GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY WELDING
JEFF

Jeff,
Thanks for the feedback.
I think I will buy a Miller 135. It uses BOTH types of wire and comes with the regulator and a cart.
I found it for $529 @ welders-direct.com.

Again, Thanx
Chopper

sounds good, miller makes fine equipment, in fact my trailer mounted gas welder is a miller bluestar. i just ran across the lincon mig and bought it for a job i was doing and needed it right then, not much time to shop around.
if you have never messed around with a mig it will take some getting used to,and is a little frustrating at first, just find a comfortable place with a couple of peices of scrap metal and go to town, making small adjustments untill you get it where you want it.

good luck and have fun with it.
