I just got a used Sears Craftsman 5hp 22gal upright compressor from a neighbor, but it has a problem. It builds pressure very slowly, after 15-20 minutes it was only at 60 PSI. My neighbor said something about a flapper valve? Anyone have any ideas?

Oh, by the way. I did find out there is no such thing as a flapper valve, atleast for my compressor.

I tried all the easy suggestions, no luck, so I took it apart. It was the crappy teflon piston ring that John in MA referred to. And it looked very crappy! Replaced it along with the cylinder sleeve and a couple of O-rings and now it works like a charm. Cost me 20 bucks and from the sound of things--should hold me for another year or two:) Thanks for all the input.

The most likely problem is the valves in the compressor head. The seconds would be the crappy Teflon piston ring used in oilless compressors. The whole things need rebuilding every few years, as opposed to compressors like mine that have been in use since the '60s. I doubt the main check valve or unloader would cause it to be this bad.

Before you open the pump, with 40 psi or so in the tank and the unit off, crack open the discharge line at the tank and see if air is escaping all the time. It is normal for a small amount of air to come out because the check valve is located here(the discharge line screws into tyhe valve at the tank or manifold). If the check valve is bad it will act up like this but still should slowly climb. If the valve is ok the you will have to open it up.

Yeah, it is oilless--and currently gutless as well. It is three years old and I'm not sure how much it was used. I let it run and it maxed out at 80 psi, wouldn't go any higher than that

"Flapper Valve" I think what he meant was reed valve. Some smaller units used these. You might want to remove the head and see how it is set up.
Depending on age and oil or oiless unit. May need an overhaul.

Sounds to me like the pump is worn out? Is this compressor one of the oilless ones? If it is and you use it much, you can plan on rebuilding it yearly. Good luck!!
