I remember someone on this list or the Allis Chalmers list mentioning about using compact spare tires for front tractor tires. Well I have mounted one on the front of a AC B. It works but seems a little small. question, do they come in different widths as tires do? Never paid much attention to them, don't know much about them, but as the junk yard charged $5, seems like a good way to go. Comments?

Thanks for the imput guys! Some interesting information too. I will be using them, can't beat the $5 price from the junkyard.

I have two temporary spares on the front of my
CASE VAC that work and look great. They come
in different profiles (ie 70 and 85 series, I
think)and some of the profiles are a lot taller
and look a lot more like tractor tires. The
taller profile tires are harder to find but they
are around. I'm not at the house so I can't run
out and look at the tractor and don't remember the
size that I'm using. On the CASE they are 15" by
something. If you are interested in the size, let
me know and I will check.

Saw a Miller Tire Co. online ad that says they are giving them away right now. Gene

well, they're rated for low speed, and guess they'll last as long as they will last. Had some laying in the weather for five years and they don't look too bad. If the price is right, use them. John in Ne.

John,
Just a point of info regarding compact spares. Several years ago one of the car magazines did a test on compact spares. There is a race called "One lap of America". They took a SHO Taurus and put a compact spare on the front and drove the race, some 9500 miles at an average speed of well over 80 mph. When the race was completed they were reasonably sure the tire could probably do the race a couple more times. They then put one on a Corvette and did some skidpad and drag race testing and to their amazement the tire did not substantially degrade the 'Vettes performance and certainly not to the level the average driver would ever notice. the bottom line was that the warnings on the tires are primarily a liability issue for the manufacturers but in the real world the compact spares are capable of about anything the average driver would dish out.

That magazine would be Car & Driver, in case anyone's curious. They do the One Lap each year as a revival of the editor's pet project back in the '70s--the real Cannonball Run.
