I worked for JD in the 50's&60's and my father was a part of a JD dealership from '39-62 and they always made it plain to us that a block had to be out of the tractor to bore!! Also something we found out was that the block is not always true to the piston travel if the boring machine is set up on the head end of the block, and will cause teriffic wear on wrist pins and bushing. At that time JD reccomended that a block on all Waterloo tractor engines(A,B,G,H 50,60,70,520.etc.)) be bored from the rear only, they told us this was the only true end, to line up on,so that the pistons would have less side to side travel, you could look at the blocks and see a diagnoal wear pattern of the ones that wore out the wrist pin bushings, also some would have excessive side wear on the connecting rod journals. We usually got our blocks from JD. The Dubuque engines (M,MT,40 etc) might be bored if you had a good operator, but we always had to take them apart, and we also had to make sure we got all the shavings out of them, especially out of the oil passageways.
