Semi-Gloss to High-Gloss Paint

I'm a little ahead of myself here, but this summer I will be painting the interior of my shop and garage. The color will be white.white. I figure on buying good quality paint in a 5 gallon bucket. However, all the pails of paint I've seen are semi-gloss. I want a bright, washable surface. Can something be added to semi-gloss paint to increase its shine/washability?

I put 2 coats of Water base, high gloss white enamel on my shop 28 years ago ..... needs 2 more,but still looks OK..... .

These guys that the white hurts there eyes when they weld....I use a helmet when I weld, my eyes are Ok..... .paint walls and celing high gloss white (inside).....You need your shop as light and bright as you can get it..... ..Don

My friend is a painting contractor he uses Sears Best..... ...get it on sale..... .

Talk to a commercial painter there is a brand around here called Con-Lux.Ive gotten some off jobs and at a garage sale where the guy was a school custodian.It not sold to the public as far as I know but its great paint.Both high gloss oil and real washable latex.It really lasts.

Might pay to check in with a paint supplier, aside from any large retailers, we know who those are, always have my best luck with the old school supplier near me.

Older type porch and deck enamel comes to mind, but the oil based stuff is getting harder to get in large quantities.


Spec sheets on paint are interesting to read, volatile organic compounds, percentage of solids by volume in regards to pigments etc.


I used a Behr, high gloss exterior paint on the sills, railings, doors and other trim on a large 2 floor apartment for a friend, it held up nicely in the 4 years it's been on there, hardened up nice, cleans up easy and looks new. If the substrate(walls) you are painting is clean and dry, primed and painted with something like this may give you what you are looking for, someone has to have high gloss in larger quantities, keep looking. Certainly going to be bright that is for sure.

The gloss level only affects how the paint looks and has nothing to do with durability. For high durability (washability) you will need to read the label. I agree with the other posts, white white will make you crazy and is generally only used on ceilings. If this is for the exterior, white white would be blinding on sunny days. For the interior I would suggest an antique white or off white with an eggshell finish.

High gloss, gloss and semi-gloss paints are generally used on woodwork, floorboards, cabinets, etc. Eggshell and flat are generally used for walls.

Gloss levels from highest to lowest are high gloss, gloss, semi-gloss, eggshell, flat. Of course flat has no gloss at all.

Dunno if it's still around,but they used to make"milkhouse paint",a hard high gloss washable enamel for dairy use.Couple coats was almost like a Formica finish.Or-theres hardboard panelling with same type of finish.

Look for a kitchen and bath paint if you want washability.

I think the washability of both paints would be the same.. both oil,however high gloss will show all the imperfections if that's what you want.If you already have a white wall then some difficulty could be experienced in picking up the wet edges.

I had a gloss white shop once, never again. It was nice to wash and have cookout and dances at but that was all. It"s too bright to weld in, and cold in the winter due to it reflecting the outside heat. Use what even color of tin, and then use a extremely high qaulity blow on insulation in a light gray color(don"t worry about washing it). This helps with cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Also helps deafen noise from air compressors, and etc.

Welding reflections were my first thought.Light green makes a better shop color.Gloss white in side a boat would be bad.
