Has anyone got any idea why my 8hp Briggs engine will always start and work fine for for half an hour. Then it starts to splutter and then dies and refuses to restart. If i come back to it another day it does exaxtly the same thing. I checked stupid thing like the vent on the gas tank and i have had the carb cleaned in the shop.

Ralph, Could be the Magnetron Module, if so equipped. Had one that acted exactly the same way. Replaced
Module, no more problems. Module is located beside
the coil on the ignition armature. Easy replaced
and inexpensive.

We had a three hp Briggs engine that acted much the same way. We tried all the things we could think of to no avail. Then called the local school mechanics instructor, he advised to take the head off while still warm and see if the valve seat was bouncing with the valve, sure enough it was, so we just used a center punch around the seat and it has worked good for three years now.

Check your valve adjustments, sounds like they may need more clearance because they will decrease due to normal wear and when the engine gets warm and will increase when cool. They will make it sputter and lose power badly. Gene

If you're pulling it hard and it does that, the exhaust valve may be getting hot and sticking open. When it cools off, it will then close, and the engine will run. I had a 12hp Kohler that would run fine and then just quit. One day after that happened I was working close enough to the thing to hear it go "PING" when that valve snapped shut! New valve cured the problem.

Does the ignition use a condenser? I've heard that they sometimes fail that way ... they quit working when they get hot.

Either way, I'd check to see if there's a spark the next time it fails.

I have had similar troubles with Briggs engines. The last one, 8 HP, lasted a total of 40 minutes on a brand new chipper. There are NO bearings on the crankshaft, just holes in the case. A piece of the case flaked off and galled the "bearing" surface and locked up the motor. This was a Briggs Industrial engine. That was, and will be my last Briggs product.
If you can afford it buy something else. Good luck.
