I wanted to help out my nephew on the farm, without handing out cash directly so I started buying him tools several years ago. He has mechanical ability, so I figured that the best way to help him would be to buy tools that he could use to save himself some money - - - and he is doing that.

I watch the sales; just picked up a set of 3/4" sockets and a set of 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2" sockets. Also have two large plastic totes full of miscellaneus tools and shop things ready to deliver when we go up there next month.

I told him that I wouldn't pull wrenches for him, but I'd buy tools for him to use. Seems to be working.

Since it hard for my relatives to keep track of what I have and don't have, I usually get a Sears gift card. It works, and since they are not all that familiar with tools it saves me from getting the cheap stuff that is irritating to use, but you can't pitch it because grandma gave it to you...

My dad on the other hand has a pretty good idea what I have (my toolbox is in his garage) and is a good tool shopper, he knows what works.

Yes...I come from a family of 5 boys ( all grown) and i'm the only one that lives close to a HF outlet. I know some of you think the stuff is junk, but often the price is so good you can buy "a pair and a spare"...like those 9.99 angle grinders. If it's a great deal, particularly on something pretty obscure (tie rod/ball joint forks the last time) I'll pick 'em up for B-day or Christmas gifts.
My brothers don't turn wrenches nearly as often as i do, but they apprciate having a tool in case they need it...and sometimes it leads them to do a job they might otherwise have farmed out.
I gave my son a chest of tools i accumulated as spares when he turned 15- but he's a world traveler now and rarely home to use 'em. My other boy is 18 months, and i hope to be around to do the same for him...

Yep.. tools are good gifts.

i have friends that chronically want to borrow tools.. I hate lending tools.. so i usually end up wrenching for them, using my tools. I try to keep track of the most requested tools .. and if i can swing it.. i get them a tool for a gift when i can.. preferably the ones they ask to borrow alot.

Every birthday and Christmas my two sons and daughter get a tool since age one. By the time they can use them they have a pretty good collection and don't steal mine..... that often.

I dont see why not. I've given many and recieved many over the years. I'd rather have something I can use instead of something I never will.

Heck, I love to get (good) tools as a gift. When Dad was alive, tools were the main gift I gave him. Some folks critcized me, but he always told me he liked tools much better than a tie..

At our Christmas family get-to-gethers, someone always has a set of screwdrivers for a gift. I've found the best way for me to keep track of tools is to never open the package. The one exception is my son bought me a set of drill bits and screw tips that I take very good care of. I use them often and so far have only broken one very small drill bit. Now that I have a tractor, I need to stock up on basic tools: sockets, breaker bars and ratchets, etc.

Totally agree with this idea. I have been getting tools basically from my folks sinceprob 15 years old or so...Now Im 43 and Its getting harder for them to find tools that I dont have already. I have A three teir roll around chest full in the basement, Couple tool boxes for the shed, tool boxes in each pickup. God forbid I go to the basement to get a tool when Im in the shed or vice versa. The thing is, is that they all have paid for themselves time and time again.

I think tools are a great idea. Many years ago I started giveing a 6 foot step ladder when the nieces and nephews started getting married. The look on their faces when they unwrapped the ladder was priceless. Just another wierd gift from crazy Uncle Dave! Each one came back later and told me that the ladder was the most useful gift they received. Like to give something useful not something that will gather dust on a closet or be regifted later.

Yup, and appreciate getting them as well. Started my tool collection with a Christmas gift from my grandparents in 1978--a Craftsman tool box and a few tools. They added to it every year, and in 30 years (including one or two tools I've bought myself over the years....) I've got a pretty decent collection. Tools are a gift that keeps on giving, and good tools will still be being used long after the cheese log is eaten, the shirt has holes, the tie is out of fashion, the video game is conquered, the bike is worn out or the cash is spent.

I got a craftsman tool set for Christmaswhen I was a teenager, best Christmas present I ever got, I still have some of those tools, I have had to replace some over time. One year we got my son a craftsman tool set for Christmas. I hope he likes his as much as I like mine.

This was brought up a few months ago and I think it is a great idea. I wish my father had done this for me. At 25 I am just getting a "decent" set of tools built up where I don't have to beg and borrow to get jobs done. I have been going to swap meets/engine shows and there are sometimes some good deals to be found on tools there. I picked up a new Snap-On tap & die set the other week for $30. Had a crack in the plastic case and couldn't be sold for new.
