Well, just pulled a paper jam from my HP printer and now the bar that carries the ink cartridges will not move. Does anyone know how to re register all the doohickeys that must be inside? Or is it time for a new printer? Thanx

I decided a couple of years ago to clean the old ink out of the ink sump of our old HP Deskjet 855C.
After the smoke cleared I finally had it back together and went to print and she would move a couple of inches and then I'd get an error message. Called tech support etc. no use.
After further wasted time I finally noticed a smudge of ink on the flexible tape which an electric eye reads to tell itself where the head is. I cleaned the ink off the tape and it has worked perfectly now for 5 years.

Thanks for the responses, guys. Nothing seemed to help, though. Further interrogation of the operator revealed that they were installing a new ink catridge, and had some trouble. So I think it musts be something mechanical. Figure I don't have anything to lose, so I'll try to take it apart this weekend.

In case any one is interested, I forced the print cartridge carrier to the left from it's rest (the position it was stuck in) and turned everything back on. Ta Da!!! Don't be afraid to use muscle mode just because it is not built as heavy duty as these old tractors. I guess it could be called a forceful finesse.

I had a similar problem with an HP printer once, and call HP's tech help.

The gal told me to unplug the power cord and hold the on/off switch down for a minute. I wondered how that would help if the power was unplugged, but I tried it. After I'd unplugged it and held the on/off switch down for a few seconds, there was some clicking and carrying on inside the printer. After a minute, I plugged it back in, turned it on, and it worked fine.

Unhook the power cable and data cable from the printer to let all the buffers clear.

Clear the printer data in Windows by double clicking on the printer icon in the lower right of your screen or by clicking start, settings, printers, and double clicking the activbe printer. Click printer and clear or cancel all documents.

Make sure you have opened all the little doors and hatches and nooks and crannies and pulled out all the paper you find there.

After you have done that, hook the data and power cables back up and turn the printer on. It should make some whirring sounds as it clears itself. When that whirring stops, you should get a green light on the display.

If you get a blinking orange light, you missed some paper somewhere. Get a flashlight and some needlenose pliers to tease out the rest of the paper bits.
