It's online and heating fine

Seemed like magic when I opened the tap and 160 F water endlessly gushed out. Need a tempering valve. Seeing that there's always coolant in the panel, is it possible for a solar siphon to overheat?

No pump, controls or electricity. It's a typical (unusual) closed loop siphon installation. My bedroom is open to a finished portion of the attic so a old gas water heater tank is hanging sideways at the peak. The drinking water go's in and out normally but convecting non toxic propylene glycol from the collector circulates in the flue part under no pressure. The 8X10 collector is grooved 20 ga steel with cu tubing soldered 4 " apart with 8mm polycarbonate glazing mounted and flashed directly onto the shingles of a 6/12 pitch roof using isocyanurate foam. Was pondering using a "Phase Change Material" filling the old heater tank with sealed 1" cpvc pipes full of paraffin. The wax is molten when the tubes are sealed and they would not be quite full creating a vacumme when cool.
I'll take pictures after installing the roof flashing. Need to figure out how to insulate the tank too.

I've been using one for years - but I'm in New York - land of low sun. My solar panels are hooked to an 80 gallon storage tank. Same tank is also hooked via thermosiphon to my wood furnace coils. Water is heated 3/4 of the year with wood, and the rest (summer) with solar. Heated storage tank feeds into a 40 gallon LP gas heater which rarely - if ever comes on. Mainly just for backup. But, I have a tempering valve at the output of the 80 gallon storage tank - to protect the LP gas heater from damage. If you feed water into an LP tank heater that's too hot - it can burn out the built-in thermal fuse.

If you are using direct to the faucet - with no back-up tank hooked in line - then it seems a tempering valve is a good idea. In regard to overheating a panel - no it cannot happen if all is hooked correctly and the storage tank has a T/P relief valve.

Where are you located? Curious what your lattitude is (I am at 40deg) and if its feasable in IL. Did you buy your panels or build them?

I'm north of you in Wisconsin. Built em myself and it wasn't easy. Will post photos and description. With the overcast winters I'll still need the LP heater but the bills will be much lower.

It's very good to hear someone up north making this work... you and jdemaris What little I have read it was suggested as a waste of time unless in the south.

Very interested to see pictures and more detailed description. It may be a good way to get free hot water for the pressure washer.
