Just bought a new 97 Dodge diesel 2500 with tow package. Inch square plug and small retcangle plugs at the rear of the truck no signal or power on any of these. Plug under steering column with red, black, blue and small wire with brake signal on it. Under hood fuse block has a 40amp trailor fuse and a trailor relay. Whats the relay for and shouldn't I have power on a wire on the connector under the steering column? Shouldn't the plug at the rear have brake, turn signals.

The relay enables supplying power from a source independent of the light switch to the running and clearance lights on the trailer. The relay coil is pulled in by the light switch, the relay contacts connect the 40 amp fuse to the trailer connector wiring. The Dodge light switch is just barely adequate to drive the lights on the truck; it burns out fairly quickly if you try to drive trailer lights directly by (say) using vampire connectors back at the tail lights.

The relay and under-dash connector are provided regardless of whether or not the factory trailer-tow package was purchased with the vehicle.

The factory trailer tow package, at least the wiring part, consists of an add-on harness running from a connector near the fuel tank back to the rear bumper, as well as a 7 pin tow connector and some adapters.

(The exact wiring arrangement depends on the year of the truck -- not certain on the 1997 as I have a 1995.) You can buy the needed wiring harness at the dealer for around $100 if the truck did not originally come with the trailer tow package.

Lots of this sort of information is available at the "turbo diesel register".

The red, black, blue connector is to hook up a controller for electric brakes. Now as to no power at the back I'm not sure what that relay does. I would also check to see if there are any other fuses out or start checking wires for open circuits.

You bought a new 11 year old truck? Or did you buy a new to you used truck? I'm confused.

I would like to find a new 11 year old truck. This one is about as close as we could find. It only has 113k miles. Yes it is only new to us.
