stopped the other day at the local lawn and garden implement dealer, they sell john deere and stihl products to get a couple chains for my stihl ms170 saw. has a 12 inch bar. light saw, great for limb trimming. just be be sure, put a tape measure on the bar. (have a couple other saws, and sometimes forget) tell the parts guy...need 2 chains for a ms170 with a 12 inch bar. nope he says...14 inch bar. i said, well i put a tape measure on it and its 12. nope he says 14, cant use a tape measure to measure bar lenght he says. here they are. ok. took em home. they're wrong. too long. so now and can drive back and get the right chain, or just buy a dang 14 inch bar. sometimes i feel like i just took a trip to the planet of stupid.

Agree there is no excuse or need for arrogance but inexperience is something we have all been through. Sure hope my 16 year old son gets some customers a little more forgiving than this bunch while he learns which end is up.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, given the stoopid questions asked by the wanna-bee 'farmers', yuppies, and small time gardeners that make up 99 percent of the users on this board, they couldn't tell the difference between a muffler bearing or a air desmogifier.
Lots of yap, very little intelligent information.

Glennster, make sure he gives you the correct gauge of chain. The use a picco chain .050 driver width and a picco narrow .042 width drivers. Stihl uses that narrow chain to make their little cheap saws cut with a 14" bar.

I learned a long ago that it all pays the same to the counter guy for a good job or a bad job. Individual was looking for a job when that one was found.

Sent my new bride to pick up parts for an over haul job on my Buick. Well, long story short he gave her most of the parts must have been the out fit she had on? Did get the right parts. Forty some years later have the same cook Buick long gone.

Hey guys, Some of them parts guys are kids. Go in there and ask them for a radiator cap for a 69 VW beetle. No such thing-Their air cooled. If that dont work, tell them you need a "electronic demagnitizer. Let them know that the polarity must match. THEY WILL BE LOOKING FOR DAYS

Went a chain type parts store [my fault] Got several parts and was asked "what else" I said 8 AC 45TS Sparkplugs. The smarta$$ed clerk ask me what I was going to put them in,I said what diffrence does it make? I just want 8 AC 45TS plugs.
He said if you don"t tell me what you are putting them, I won"t sell them to you.
I left the $70.00++ of parts laying, and went to another store where they sold me the whole list, with no questions.
What if I"d sent someone to get them for me that didn"t know what I was working on,or what a sparkplug is??

If you gentlemen think you have trouble getting parts, try being woman. I had a 1975 Chevy Monza with the 262 V8 engine, 4 sp tranny (GREAT CAR). I hated going to the parts store. The parts guy, and yes they were all younger than me, would give me that "dumb broad" look (bad idea) and tell me it was a 4 cyl. I invariably had to demand they look it up. I finally invited one parts guy to go count the spark plugs.

That's what happens when the owners of these places buy into the myth that, with this fantasmagorical computer cataloging system, you can take any semi-literate jacka$$ off the street and instantly make a parts expert out of him...thus allowing the owner to pay said this instant parts expert a lot less than he would an experienced parts person.

Sadly for the customers, THEY get what the business owner pays for...as the business owner wonders what happened to his repeat business and CSI (customer satisfaction index) numbers.

Then the business owner decides the economy must be on the skids.

[Based upon my experiences from 35+ years in the parts business. Your experiences may differ.]

Well said. Alot of people say you get what you pay for. HA ! Let me tell you my boss is getting ALOT more than he is paying for ! Putting up with all the %*^%# people that walk in off the street ain't worth what little I make. Getting time to move on to a real job only trouble is might have to relocate to China. LOL

I think everyone should have to spend some time on BOTH sides of the parts counter.

My H has an IH #33 loader on it with a hydraulic tilt bucket. I needed leather cups for the lift cylinders. So I go into the local Case IH dealer and ask the young parts man for leather cups for a #33 loader. He asked what tractor it was on. I didn't know what that had to do with it, but I told him an H.

He said if it was an H, it couldn't have a #33 loader on it, because IH never put a hydraulic tilt loader on an H. I told him someone did, and I'd be glad to go home and get a picture of it, but I still said we're talking about a #33 loader, and I don't see what the @%$&*&^^%$ the tractor it's on has to do with it.

All this time, a cousin of mine was waiting for parts and cracking up over the conversation. The parts man told me the cups must not be available, because he couldn't even find a #33 loader on his computer.

About that time, another older parts man walked in and told the young'n to go to the microfiche. Whereupon the parts man went to the microfiche, immediately found a #33 loader, and got parts numbers for the cups. They had to order them in, but I expected that. Meanwhile, the other parts man took care of my cousin.

Before I left, the parts man asked if my cousin and I were brothers. So I had to explain that to him. There is a family resemblance.

if its a Stihl bar, it is stamped into the bar what length it is, its guage & the pitch of the roller nose sprocket. About an inch or so in front of the "dogs" that bite into the log. May be on the outside or inside of the bar, depending on which way you have it turned. The bar should be flipped upside down every time you take the chain off. Otherwise a dip is worn in the bar from constantly sawing in one place on the bar.

Hello Glennster
I too had a parts man tell me what I didn't have.
366 cu.in.Chevrolet engine. I was told it had to have a timing chain. I explained to the wana be mechanic that the cam was gear driven by the cranckshaft. Just like a diesel engine. It took a call from the factory to tell him that yea! we did that, made an engine like that and shipped the cam I needed with the rest of the parts! Take the chain back and show him the difference. he may finally see the light....maybe!
Guido.

When you go back, take your old chain with you and show him the error he made. If you don't at least get an appology, wrap the chain around his neck and tell him to turn around and run.

Know what you mean my brother works on tractors for a living. Was working on a IH 454 gas, tells the CASE IH parts guy the fuel pump is bad, parts guy says that shouldn't keep it from running.

I've told this story before, but I went to the parts store and asked for sparkplugs for a chevy chevette. The kid behind the counter asked if it was a gas or diesel. Jim

Had a guy wanting sparkplugs for a W9 IH tractor, parts guy asked him "gas or Diesel ?"

The guy gave the partsman a "you stupid arse" look, then the partsman showed him that both W9 gas and WD9 diesel have spark plugs, and not the same ones. In this case, the customer was the one with the silent red face. It works both ways ;-)

I ordered a part for my daughters Range Rover over the phone. The parts guy knew better than I what I needed. Needless to say when it arrived 2 weeks later it was the wrong part. The Parts guy at Roverland parts inc. got belergerant over the phone with me but took the part back but I had to pay $45 shipping.
