I am getting ready to buy a couple replacement chains for my Stihl 16 inch chainsaw. Is there one brand that seems to be better than the others or are they all about the same. It will be used for general purpose cutting (pruning and once in a while cutting down a tree).

The best I have found is Carlton chain, next would be Oregon chrome plated chain bought from a dealer, box store Oregon chain has half the cutters and are junk. If you want a real good chain, call Rapco and buy Carlton chain that has had the cutters carbide sprayed. Now that will stay sharp a long time.

I have used Windsor with replacement sprocket nosed bars for years. In fact I have two bars from Windsor, 1 bar is 40 years old, bought in 1968, and the other in 1973. Had to replace both sprocket noses on both bars. Both are 16". Now for chains, I use Laser saw chains. I have used then for over 20 years with excellent luck. No problems with them what so ever. They hold their edge really well. I have 3 Uncles that own Stihl chainsaws, and the all say that the Laser chain does as good as the original Stihl chain. Hope this helps.
Bruce.

I've heated my house with wood for over 20 years and have used stihl 031, 041, 026, 028, 044 and some poulan saws. Stihl chain is by far the best, and Oregon is the worst, especially prepackaged store bought Oregon. The others are somewhere in between. A Stihl chain will stay sharp maybe 25-50% longer than an Oregon by my use.

Well, first off if yoru looking for a new bar windsor oregon or stihl solid bars with replaceable tips are best to use. They last alotlonger. Now chains. Why buy stihl when you can buy a oregon for half the price? Or go to Bailey"s.com they carry woodsman pro chain. I have ran all three. In my opion for firewood cutting the Oregon LGX series of chain is the best for the money. Holds a edge longer tehn other lower priced brands( just as long as a stihl) and it is just a bit softer then a stihl so it eaiser to sharpen. A good buy buy on LGX is 2 chains for about the price of one stihl.

Stihl chains seem to stay sharper longer, but I have always used Oregon chain. Recently, I went to using carbide chains on the bigger saws. The only problem with carbide is they have to be ground and aren"t as easy to sharpen.

I do not use a chain saw much anymore but when i did we cut lots of wood . The old saw i had was not a good saw but it cut . the chain that came with it was just a bit better then junk ya may get the tree down and about half of it cut before ya had to stop and sharpen it . Went to the local saw shop and wanted a better chain and the guy that ran the place looked at the saw and made me a chain up he called it a super chipper chain , said that i would not be spending my time sharpening it . But the down side was that when it did need sharpening that it would have to be ground as it was to hard for the file. Now at the time we were cutting out old fence rows and lots of the trees had wire in them . And that chain would cut thru wire staples nails dirt even a rock . It just kept cutting like new . My buddy even had one made up for his saw Once a years before we would start cutting we would take them in to the old guy in the wheel chair and he would tune them up had that chain on for i do not remember how many years . It was pricy gave 46 bucks for it in 79 for a 16 inch 3/8 pitch chain .Old Tom has since passed away and now we can not find that chain around here .

beware of the cheap bargain chain. Sometimes the generic chains are not tempered correctly & they are so hard you cannot file them by hand or a grinder will burn them up.Or they may be so soft that they won't stay sharp. All the major brands are good, Carlton, Winsor, Oregon etc.

I used to heat with wood. I use a Stihl saw, but I found the Oregon chains ok, especially since the Stihl cost a lot more. They all get dull. I change the chains when I feel it lugging. I usually have 3 chains when I know I am going to do a couple of trees. A sharp blade really saves the powerhead.

generic chains suck. Buy only Stihl. At least their chains are still made in germany.

Are you sure, A Stihl rep told me about 6 years ago their chain was made in Virginia Beach where the rest of their stuff is made.

I have an Echo, but I've been using Stihl chains in it. After I tried the first one, I liked it a lot better than the Oregons I had been using.

Stihl seems to stay sharp and last a little longer. Don't know if it's harder steel or what.
