Excessive Acetylene Consumption?

I just got one of those acetylene torches with the small tanks (2 feet tall or so). When I weld with about 5 PSI of oxygen and about 5 PSI of acetylene, the acetylene tank pressure drops to unreadable after only about 10 minutes and the flame gets oxygen-rich; in other words, it appears that I've run out of acetylene. I thought maybe the first tank was a fluke, but the same thing happened with the second tank. In contrast, the oxygen supply seems to hold up pretty well.

The acetylene tank says it holds 10 cubic feet of "dissolved" acetylene. The tank gets quite cold (no frost, though) and still feels pretty heavy even when "empty". There are no leaks.

My question: Is this normal? Am I really going through a $10 tank of acetylene every 10 minutes, or is there some other explanation?

Tanks - er - Thanks in advance.

It sounds like your tank is too small for your torch. Check the manufacturer's specs for your torch tip; it should specify the acetylene consumption. If it's more than 2 cubic feet per hour, you're asking for trouble.

You may have a leak. Pressurize your torch, then shut off the tank. Your torch should hold pressure indefinitely.

Mark: If this outfit was mine I'ld get it [gauges etc.] checked out ASAP. If by chance you're exceeding over a 7-1 draw-down rate [as it becomes unstable as in a bomb in the making], a larger tank maybe in order.

Maybe, Steve from US alloys or ? will shed a little more lite on this and hopefully also cover the dangers of Acetylene running thru copper pipe/tubing.

It sounds like you have an MC size PrestoLite tank, and a large torch. The tank is remaining heavy because aceteline tanks are basicly full of a concrete like material, the actual weight of the gas probably doesn't amount to a pound of weight. That material is saturated with acetone which the acetelene is disolved in.
The burn time on small tanks is short, especially with a large torch tip.
It is very important for acetelene tanks to be in a vertical position, to prevent the acetone from getting into the regulator.

You probably already know that the tank must be kept vertical.

Sounds like you may have a faulty Gauge.
